Donny Loved Bill Belew's Jumpsuits!

Fri Apr 12, 2013 4:22 am

I recently found a 2008 interview with legendary singer Donny Osmond where he discusses many subjects, including his December 22, 1966 Las Vegas debut, when the Osmond Brothers opened for sultry singer Shirley Bassey at the Sahara Hotel's Congo Room. He was 9 at the time.

And Donny goes on to recall his experiences with Elvis, when the brothers followed his 1969 stand at the International Hotel, opening for Nancy Sinatra, and doing the same for her a year later at Caesar's Palace.

It seems Elvis popped by backstage in 1969 (and maybe 1970) for some chatting. Maybe they talked about Bill Belew's jumpsuit designs, as soon after, the Utah rockers were rockin' the same sartorial splendor as Elvis.

Donny's interview grudgingly admits that "Elvis had it maybe slightly before us ... the same designer, Bill Belew."

Since Belew began working with Elvis in June 1968, the definition of "slightly before" gets stretched ... just a smidge.

Evidently, the Osmonds went on to influence other rockers of the period, so Donny shouldn't feel too badly.

Interesting, Doc.

In '74 Donny (and his sister Mary) released "I'm Leavin' It (All) Up To You". Was this before Elvis rehearsed this song, or was he inspired by Donny and Mary's version? Or was it a cover of an earlier version by somebody else?

I'm not a lover of Elvis and his jumpsuits. The earlies ones (69/70) were ok, but after that they just got worse. But Donny Osmond!!!....no thanks.

if i am not mistaken the 1969 outfits consisted of two pieces: the trousers and the shirt.

Imho those were the best outfits he would wear from 1969 to 1977. Different and stylish. And most certainly fit for the king.

Elvis' primary influence was an October 1957 R&B single by Don and Dewey.

Six years later Dale & Grace hit #1 with their somewhat watered-down cover of this R&B classic, and the title was slightly altered to "I'm Leavin' It Up To You."

Donnie and Marie Osmond's 1974 cover of "I'm Leaving It Up To You" came well after Elvis' known performances in rehearsal and concerts from 1972-1973. And they were pulling from Dale and Grace's version.

I agree, the two-piece suits were really cool- trousers and shirt. But when we get to suits like The gypsy alpine, penquin, frog, dog and cat suits, they just got silly.

While we're on this tangent, did Bill Belew have a mancave?

You are very welcome. Hopefully the single master will reappear on YouTube -- the outtake is good, but Specialty 610 is terrific.

Unless you are being sarcastic. Donald Osmond is not legendary. You were being sarcastic right? Oh and that's Mike Jagger.
