Play We're Coming In Loaded from Girls! Girls! Girls! and listen to a classic example of how "The Voice" could take an otherwise insipid song and turn it into a rocker.

You've Lost That Loving Feeling from any of the TTWII tapes would be good. The guy was giving it all he had in August, 1970.

Didn't strike me today. I do love Elvis' recording, though.

Agree, but it's so loooong and repetitive... and with a running time of 5+ minutes, you can easily put other two better songs in its place.

It's about an ENDLESS highway, and an ENDLESS trail: it's supposed to be long! ;)

Seriously, it is quite majestic. I have put it on "repeat" and thoroughly enjoyed it.

"Magnificent Desolation" -- Buzz Aldrin, on the moon.

And pefectly capturing the seemingly endless monotony of EP's mid-sixties career: toweringly brilliant recording.

We're missing Adam and Evil.

Re: Elvis - The Voice

Sun Mar 17, 2013 9:14 pm

You probably don't need or want more songs thrown into the mix at this stage.. but what about 'I Need You So'? I've always loved his singing in this song. And it's one of those lesser known tracks..

Re: Elvis - The Voice

Sun Mar 17, 2013 10:45 pm

Jimmys got it about right .......

would also remove A Big Hunk O' Love, It's Now Or Never, Heartbreak Hotel simply to prevent that "hits" feel, we have too many of them already ..... also maybe use 68 versions of That's All Right, and perhaps swap Mystery Train for a rockin 69 Mystery Train/tiger man version ........

Re: Elvis - The Voice

Sun Mar 17, 2013 11:25 pm

I dont know why people would want We Can Make The Morning Undubbed Masters removed? it's as stated by trouble_JW a bonus song. Plus i'ts a great song

Re: Elvis - The Voice

Johnny2523, I wouldn't put the Tuscon version of Danny Boy in there. His voice is nasal and shaky, with very limited pitch control and natural vocal range. He puts a lot of feeling in it, but in the same way that vocal technique isn't everyting, neither is feeling alone.

I know the last thing you want is for someone to add even more but I just love talking about this stuff. I deleted the ones on your list that I would take off and I would add

60's

Thrill of Your Love
Starting Today
Something Blue

70's

How The Web Was Woven
You Don't Have To Say You Love Me
Trying To Get To You

Trying To Get To You is a song that always brought the best out in him even near the end. I think it would be interesting to see how the song evolved from the 50's to the 70's. Sorry to muddy the water.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys....and you all have added great personal opinions too. I will try to use each suggestion and create the best sounding album possible, I sure have plenty to work with.....still taking songs out will be a task.....a task I am blessed with thanks to Elvis!

I will have a look and TRY to get the list down to 50.....taking into account any suggestions since the last post I did.

Again, thanks to all!

Re: Elvis - The Voice

Am I the only one scratching his head here? Every Elvis recording highlights the voice in some way or other. So what's the point? And you can have the best instrument in the world, but if you don't know how to use it then there's little point in owning it - and in the final years, he had largely forgotten how to use it and play it with any form of subtlety.

The majority of selections here (thankfully) show off not Elvis's voice but the wonderful ways in which he was capable of using it. The opening list on the thread suggests that by "voice" we mean strength of voice - that's the only reason why a song like Hurt would be included here, or even American Trilogy - great though it is. A song such as I Need Somebody To Lean On show Elvis's voice off far better than the bombastic songs that threatened to dominate the thread in its early stages.

Indeed...infact, I believe you contributed to my change doc.

Do people think a more "powerful" selection would be better?
