Best concert year by year during the "concert years"

#1133282

Post by fg76 »

*If one has heard a concert from the early years, they can put it on here - but I want to deal mostly with 1969-1977. This is kind of a retread, but this time I actually want to pay attention and see what people think their best show is year by year.

My pick:

1969: August 3, 1969 - It's just the raw nature of the show. Can't Help Falling in Love is sung as a ballad, instead of a throwaway. Just seems so new and fresh for him to perform. All the 1969 shows are great, but this one just seems to be better to me.

1970: While they're in bad quality, I really love the Astrodome shows. I listened to one of the last ones (I'll pull up the date after I finish this). The last time he opened the show with Blue Suede Shoes, and just hearing him do Kentucky Rain live was great. I shivered to think what happened to this guy.

1971: November 10, 1971- Boston - Can't tell if he was sick of his routine at this point, or having fun with the live audience.

1972: June 10, 1972 - ES - MSG - I sometimes toss this show with the April 9, 1972 ES Hampton Roads show, but as good the Hampton Roads show is - I used to really enjoy this one from June 10.

1973: August 1973 - He was seriously trying old songs seriously (Trouble), and attempting to do new songs. Most people would just cop out with Hawaii (Jan 14), but I find his attempt to do songs like Memphis, Tenn and others more refreshing. I even liked the Rock melody of now and 1974 - it gave songs he really didn't want to do airtime and they were done respectably enough.

1974: March 20, 1974 - Memphis - with maybe the March 18 Richmond show second and the March 12 Richmond show third. Maybe one of the last times he really was "untouchable" as people would have assumed.

1975: July 19, 1975 ES - Uniondale, NY - Some great shows come from this years, and some of the ones you think were good just drag. This might only be a AR, but it's a good show.

1976: December 31, 1976 - Pittsburgh - I try to say there was a better show this year, but even the good soundboards from the days prior don't really live up to this show. While I think December 28 and 29 might have been more high-energy shows, this one was still kind of the best one with a great performance and a long set-list. If only phantom CBS cameras were in the audience this night . . .

1977: April 24, 1977 - Ann Arbor, MI - Maybe the last decent tour before Elvis self-destructed for good. When you listen to him on May 3, he sounds more tired than totally out of it. He really was on an attempt to do some really great shows during this stint. The April 24 show features two songs that went to the Moody Blue album. I think Elvis thought about how good the Pittsburgh show was sometimes. [i.e. From Feb 21, before Reconsider Baby: This is a blues song I did about a month and a half ago - direct reference to Pittsburgh. i.e. From April 24, after Unchained Melody - Thank you, I've done it better.]

Bonus

1968: The 1st stand-up show - I love the version of Blue Suede Shoes that he miscues on, when he goes uh . . . uh-uh - keep it going son.

What are yours?

1969: August 3 (Return Of A Prodigy CD) I agree great show, beautiful version of cant help falling in love

1970: August 12 1970 MS (Sitting On top Of The World) - Great show! Great versions of ''Little Sister, Love Me, One Night'' well the whole show is great.

1971: hmm I would say February 19 1971 Altough the November 10 1970 (FTD: As Recorded At Market Square Garden '71)
show is great to. The first one has a interesting setlist and a great version of help me make it through the night, and the last show has a great version of i'm leaving.

1972: January 26. Great show, First versions of You Gave Me a Mountain, American Trilogy, Never Been To Spain, Big Hunk O Love, and Until It's Time For You To Go. Strong Show, Not much talk.

1973: August season, Great versions and returns of songs, Memphis Tennesee (which has been away since 1971), Make The World Go Away (Same thing), First and only live version of raised on rock, Crying time and its just a great season, and lots better then the february season.

1974: Jan-March Season Great shows, strong setlists, returns of Sweet Caroline, You've Lost that Loving feeling, Trying to Get to you and others.

1975: July 24 1975, Great show, Jailhouse Rock, Wooden Heart, Return of Something, and first and only live version of Pieces Of My Life

1976: December, 31 1976, one of my favourite shows of all time, elvis is strong, looking great, in great spirits, counting in the new year, With the only live version of Rags To Riches.

1977: June 26 1977, Elvis ended on a high note, Its a strong show, and only the oldies are actually trow away, Great versions of Fairytale, I Can't Stop Loving You (Has been gone since 1975), & Bridge Over Troubled Water

1969 - August 22 DS - Elvis' finest live version of Suspicious Minds
1970 - February 23 CS - best show from 1970 IMO
1971 - January 27 MS - always enjoyed this show... one of the first boots I ever purchased
1972 - TIE between June 10 ES and April 9 ES - two outstanding performances
1973 - January 14 - nuff said
1974 - January 26 OS - first performances of Let Me Be There and Help Me and one of the last live performances of Big Hunk O' Love
1975 - April 1 MS - Elvis is in great spirits and sings with authority
1976 - TIE between Nov 25 Eugene, OR and Dec 31 Pittsburgh, PA
1977 - June 21 - commendable versions of Hurt, Trying To Get To You and My Way - save the embarrassing commentary between songs, the last decent performance he gave

1969 - August 3rd.
1970 - February 23rd. Best ever versions of "One Night" and "It's Now or Never." February 15th and the entire August run come close.
1971 - Haven't heard much from this year to judge, but I'm going to go with November 11th in Cincinnati purely based on the set list which is terrific.
1972 - Either Hampton Roads or the MSG shows. He's in the best voice post-1970 at MSG, but the energy behind Hampton Roads has a lot going for it.
1973 - Again, have not heard much from this year. I find Aloha underwhelming, so I'm gonna go with 8 / 30. Great audience tape of a great show. Really cool rare version of "Trouble."
1974 - March 20th in Memphis or August 19th in Vegas. He's in better voice and shape for the Memphis show but the August show has to be commended for the effort he made to change up the show, and he puts on a more than decent performance on most numbers.
1975 - either Asheville or Uniondale.
1976 - Pittsburgh, but Birmingham and Atlanta come close
1977 - Ann Arbor

That's the same amount I calculated; Stein Erik Skar made a mistake somewhere in his (very good) book ......

From memory..he lists two shows on March 15, 1974 in Knoxville and 2 shows in Atlanta on June 5, 1976..

He also has one show more in Lake Tahoe 1976 and one less ..in 1973 I think..not sure, though in this case
..the total amount remains the same, of course..
