Inherit the Wind master lyric mistake ??

Sat Feb 16, 2013 8:36 pm

I was listening closely to the Back In Memphis FTD and it sounds like Elvis mistakenly sings "there's a dream in my VEIN instead of BRAIN at approx. the 1:27 mark of the master. He also does the same in the middle verse of take 1. How do you hear it? Thanks

Don't hear it.

That's interesting because years ago, when I was first learning the song I couldn't be certain what was the correct lyric - "vein" or "brain" - based on Elvis' singing.

This lyric miscue was discussed somewhere before awhile ago. I can't recall where, but he does reverse the lyrics.

I can hear it. I've always noticed it.

Me too, though perhaps not 'always' (which would be 43 years). It is far easier to listen to music nowadays, and be more critical of it, than when we only had vinyl.

I'm still amazed it wasn't spotted, though.

Elvis selected his master takes based on the 'feel' of the performance, rather than for being word-perfect...

One of you should write to Sony and complain about the "flaw" you have uncovered in this crucial 1969 recording.

Please let us know how it goes. ;-)

For some of us this is a crucial recording...
(I want to be a part of the wink craze, too.)

Me, too.

I never noticed it, until now, because I was too focused on the first line, where I think he says "veins" instead of "vein".

Wasn't it in TTWII that Elvis said RCA still couldn't understand or hear the words he was singing? Well, it wasn't only RCA.. :(

We've certainly had this discussion about Elvis' "lyric changes" before ("We Can Make The Morning", a. o.) and yes, I've noticed it the first time I heard the song, although I barely spoke english at the time.
But I felt it was unusual that Elvis used the same word for a rhyme twice so I figured he simply must have mixed up the word. And I noticed his heavy breathing also. Whatever. :D

If you play it backwards he says "planes trains, and automobiles"!

For me, it spoils the recording of what is a relatively serious song. You can't have 'a dream in your vein', after all !

They should have spliced-in a correction or used another take.

Okay, it's not THAT perfect but... well, all right. Just tampered around again with musical history.

Jimmy, can you give it a try?

P. S.: All of a sudden during my splicing job this part turned up, which I looped... sorry, can't help but laugh... sometimes I think I got wired the wrong way, man!

Oh contrare Steve! Get yourself a Victoria's Secret catalogue and I'll bet you'll have a dream in your vein. Main vein that is.
