Hard rock songs Elvis could have done

Postby dr borgo » Fri Jan 11, 2013 9:30 am

I remember vaguely reading or hearing somewhere that Elvis wasn't opposed to recording a hard rock type of song, but he couldn't find one that he thought he could do. I know he touched on early funk with songs like If You Don't Come Back. That song is pure 70's groove. So what about hard rock? I wonder what he could have done with Mountain's Mississippi Queen. Yeah it's pretty heavy but, I can sort of here an Elvis version of that song. Somewhere between Polk Salad Annie and Proud Mary.
Whether you're black or white, whether you're country, redneck or a freak, young or old, from Moscow to London or Memphis, Elvis Presley will still be the King of rock 'n' roll

Depends on what you call hard rock. CCR? Yeah, there are many of their songs besides Proud Mary that would've worked for Elvis. Led Zeppelin? Forget it. Although Dread Zeppelin gave us a pretty good idea of what the mix would sound like!

Not a hard rock song at all, but lyrically, maybe Abba´s "Knowing me, knowing you" could have fitted. Elvis almost did some Abba-ish songs like Moody blue or Way down.

I dont think hard rock like Zep or Miss Queen would have been good, but good rock and roll would have been like Traveling Band or Bad Moon Rising from CCR, or getting into a more funky groove The Weight by the Band or Lean On Me by Bill Withers. All perfect songs for Elvis.

The uptempo, swamp rock sounding "Way down" is 'Abba-ish'??? Really??

I would have loved to hear Elvis sing a few KISS songs, the lighter ones, such as: "Hard Luck Woman" or "Beth".

As an Elvis fan, where did you 'vaguely' remember reading or hearing 'somewhere' about the Elvis hard rock song comment??!!! Would it have been. perhaps, on the very well known, well documented filmed and recorded press conference that Elvis gave before his world famous and highly regarded Madison Square Garden concerts???!! :wtf:

'Dancing Days' from Led Zep would have been great.
As a matter of fact a large part of their repetoire would have been doable for Elvis.

Elvis and the band had no problem taking on a versatile range of styles and they would have been able to make something out of it, no doubt.

If you're able to perform a freak song such as Little Darlin', you're able to do anything!

Hello Patrick68,

IIRC Elvis wasn't such a big fan of KISS. I think it was mentioned in some Elvis book about The Stanley Brothers (could have been Dee Presley's "Elvis And Me").

Led Zeppelin's ''Rock and roll'' would probably be the best one i can think of for Elvis.

Agree completely about "Rock and Roll." Many times I have imagined a lean, mean Elvis walking out and kicking off a '70s show with this classic. It's in the key of E major, which was always in Presley's musical comfort zone. Imagine how much Ronnie Tutt would have loved driving this track, and James Burton could have really smoked the solo.

That was my point exactly. I don't think of CCR as hard rock, and I can imagine an Elvis version of Down on the Corner, Lodi or Hey Tonight; I cannot imagine Elvis covering Black Dog, Whole Lotta Love or Kashmir.

I can just imagine Elvis tearing through "Won't Get Fooled Again".

Probably just after he signed one of his deals with the Colonel.
