Elvis and...Preston North End?

Sun Dec 30, 2012 4:20 am

I have been a fan of English football since the late seventies, ever since I started collecting a magazine called "Shoot!". I live in Australia and in those days, Shoot! magazine and Match of the Day were all we had when it came to football media -it wasn't big here in those days.

I was recently doing a bit of research on a club called Preston North End. I remember reading about them a fair bit and it occurred to me that I hadn't heard about them in a while.

I was surprised to read that, for a period of about 10 years, "Can't Help Falling In Love" was played before each home game until then-manager Paul Simpson put an end to it at the beginning of the 2007 season, deeming the song to be too depressing, and blaming it for putting his players in a "down mood" before the start of each game.

Are any of our UK board members aware of this? Do you remember it happening? I think it's hysterical!

IIRC Tommy Steele took Elvis to see Preston North End playing sometime in 1959.
