an artist(s) back catalog sales (cd`s are a minimum of 18 months on the market including re-issues of older albums) example being PFAP is not a catalog item, but AN AFTERNOON AT THE GARDEN from 1997 is!!

That's pretty impressive. Shocked that Michael Jackson's not on that list. I thought he was "the King of Pop"?

because elvis has so many more back catalog titles than jackson does, add those sales all together over a one yr period and that equals a huge amount

jackson is at #69 here, and he also is at #82/100 on the TOP ARTISTS based on chart performance from the hot 100 and the billboard 200 combined where elvis sadly does not appear

I think what is perhaps most shocking is that Guns N Roses beat Elvis.

I am more impressed that Michael Jackson did not make the list. He just had his album Bad re-released.

It is a little surprising to see Elvis as high as that, but he does have a lot of albums out there. Plus, although certain products that are considered important to the diehard fans (eg PFAP) don't always sell in big numbers, other Elvis material continues to do pretty well. The various Elvis Christmas albums have together sold 80,000 or more in the US alone in the last three weeks. And they have nothing new to offer. So yes, there is a market for Elvis, but less so for the niche products.

Does this mean that Elvis is outselling the Beatles?

for 2012 yes when it comes to back catalog items, but the Beatles are doing just fine have no doubt!

Beatles were no. 1 in 2011

http://www.billboard.com/charts-year-en ... ?year=2011

Elvis at no. 8 in 2011.

Michael Jackson was no. 1 in 2010. Beatles no. 3, Elvis no. 9.

In 2009, Michael Jackson was no. 1, Beatles no. 2, Elvis not in the top 10.

In 2008, Michael Jackson was no. 2, Elvis no. 6, Beatles not inside top 10. No. 1 was Michael Bublé.

In 2007, Trans-Siberia Orchestra was no. 1, Beatles no. 4. Elvis and MJ not in the top 10.

In 2006, Johnny Cash at no. 1, Beatles no. 7, no Elvis or MJ.

I have no doubt that Afternoon In The Garden had a lot to do with Elvis being top 10. It stayed in the top 100 for almost a year. Then you got the countless amounts of greatest hits compilations that the public can choose from. You don't get that with many others. Elvis' catalog is by far second to none for a mass variety.

Remember the Beatles catalogue is considerably smaller than Elvis's.

And of course, Elvis' Christmas titles always sell very well year after year.

Perhaps, but I don't think Snap and Crackle shared Pop's dedication towards MJ.

One of my favourite bands so I can't complain about that... even Albert Goldman has a dark side....
