Best & Worst Purchase Of 2012 ?

#1109389

Post by dennyelvis »

Any thoughts on whats "rocked your boat" or let u down badly this year ? ...

The Bootleg book, now that has to be a winner, a fantastic piece on the Elvis boots from the begining to the end ,
PFAP, this package is great testiment to the unique achievement what was and is simply "Elvis", the genuine legend so much more powerful than today's short term "celebrities".

If there is a weakness, the gaps in the 8mm fan footage could have been better filled in, but we are really lucky to have the footage considering the concerts were not professionally filmed. A complete visual of "That's All Right" is a treasure, as is the concluding footage of "Suspicious Minds".

Theres a couple to set u off, im sure u have thoughts on many more ?

Best purchases of 2012

1. Original Sun single Good Rockin' Tonight in rare label variation (no Scotty & Bill)
2. A Boy from Tupelo FTD
3. Prince From Another Planet

Worst purchase of 2012

No inferior or disappointing product bought. I am much more selective than I use to be. Most FTDs I enjoy and those I have no interest in (Our memories and Hits of the 70s) I did not buy.

Worst Purchase: Some audience recording released by Convair (I think it was called "Elvis In Vegas" or something like that)

Best:
Bootleg Elvis: essential stuff for collectors.
A boy from Tupelo-Excellent
Such a night in Pearl Harbor-MRS... the defintive version..so far
Hits of the 70's FTD .. and a mean it!! Pure nostalgia, great sound, outstanding tracks.

Poorer :

AUTUMN GOLD-Audionics-No need to have it again, no upgrade at all
SunSational-Victrola- Sun tracks from 1954 through 1977... though listening and nothing new.(Same goes for their "Elvis is back" effort.. even poorer)
The 8th Wonder Of The World-Venus-Again, no upgade

But all in all, it's been a pretty good year for the fan!!

You're really putting your skin in the game, "Rob't."

My best purchase would have to be the long-awaited, mammoth "A Boy From Tupelo" Book / CD , with all the FTD titles,
and yes the vinyl especially) as key also-rans.

Image

For the main label, and rivaling so many of the FTD's would the much-talked about, mostly-loved "A Prince From Another Planet" 2-CD/ DVD set.

Image

I take care to avoid "bad" Elvis releases and most of those are the reality of an exhausted retail market for the casual fan.

I don't collect every AR title on boots but do find Straight Arrow and others continue to make it interesting for serious fans.

So it continues to be a surprisingly rich time for the serious Elvis fan and collector on FTD, Legacy labels, plus the
best of the import world. In the early '80s, I recall thinking I had reached the end of the well.

That going into 2013 I am more into Elvis than ever demonstrates
the leadership and devotion of the Elvis fan world, official and otherwise.

Best: A Boy From Tupelo, by a mile.
Runners up: On Stage FTD, From Memphis To Hollywood FTD, Welcome Home Elvis FTD, G.I Blues FTD, Prince From Another Planet (despite the weaknesses in the audio).

I anticipate the Back In Memphis FTD to be added to this list if it arrives in time, and 3000 South Paradise Road.

I think the best purchase of 2012 has to be the new The Complete 68 Comeback Special The 40th Anniversary Edition box set. And you can get it for as low as £14 on Amazon uk. 8)

Best - MRS Live 50's recordings. Sorry but I only wanted what I was missing and did not feel like shelling out the bucks for Tupelo set or a book.

Worst - The only other thing I bought was the Prince MSG box set. So, no worst fo me.
(I keep it very simple)

"Best" has got to be the BOOTLEG book.

No "worst" for me, because I learned ages ago to look before you leap with EP World purchases. Things often don't live up to their hype. I'm too selective now and even then I'll wait for reviews on releases that I'm skeptical about.

On that note, I'll never complain about FTD's, but I also don't buy them all anymore (including the book-CD combos). Therefore, no regrets on my part as far as purchases go.
