Was Elvis insecure/depressed about his weight?

Wed Nov 28, 2012 5:17 am

A question--towards the end, in '76, '77, was Elvis insecure or self conscious or depressed about his weight gain? I know some people can take becoming fat, even if they were slim as hell previously, in stride and even in pride--but I wonder how Elvis felt about his physical appearance in the last year or so? Was he working on or planning on losing the weight, from any accounts? Did he care?

I ask because Elvis strikes me as a very humble man and not very judgemental. Not the kind who'd be totally obsessed with himself or his looks. His beloved mother Gladys was overweight, and he came to look like her towards the end, with the heavy, sad bags under his eyes and the weight...Makes one wonder if he cared or not.

I don't think this fact would have been lost on Elvis at all. Looking in the mirror would have added significantly to his depression. Plus the press were very harsh on him 'fat and forty' etc.

I feel and believe that Elvis had weight issues - what I mean is he could lose and gain weight easily like he did during the mid 70s .

His mom Gladys had same problem and she gained and lost weight during her life I guess - Its purely in his genes - He got it from his moms side -

During the mid 70s Elvis lost and gained weight -
This was purely due to the tours and the medication he was given by his doctors -

Elvis didnt pass away with drug abuse -like most stars do in todays society - He passed away from the bad advice and medication he was given .I truly believe in this - He was addicted to his life style - and not drugs - As a devoted /loyal Elvis fan for many years I truly believe in this -

Yes Elvis turned out to be a recluse and depresssive person during his latter years - The Industry he was in seriously used him - what I mean is

A- Vegas - was firstly his sanctuary he loved during his early years when he made his come back to Live performances - He surely attracted many fans to come to Vegas to see him perform - Since he couldnt reach them worldwide - But in latter years 75-76 he started to tire out and hated it - Just imagine it - folks and fans -
.You perform on same stage day in /day out - 2 - 3 shows a time -

You just do shows and get back to same suite - waited on hand and foot etc -

.......................................................
B . Elvis surely was contracted for many years to play Vegas -
He never had any vacations to get rest etc during his late years -
This was because he was payn off Colonels debt at various casinos etc at Vegas -r
i truly believe that heshould have rested during his latter years more often and took care of his well being and self .
........................
........................................

C. His advisors / Doctors took advantage of Elvis good nature - Elvis couldnt say No to any thing - He was too kind to upset any one and believed in many .

............................................................................................................
D. Elvis should have travelled and seen the world - you know as a worldwide mega star -
Only if Colonel had a passport to travel - This way Elvis would have rested more criss crossin many states and countries and deserved the rest he was allowed - Instead he played in USA Only - This was due to bad management thru out his career - [/b]

.................................................................................
E. -Regardn his movie years and Live performances - He should have made good movies instead
Holly wood used him so did RCA And record moguls - Every one used him I feel and believe -
Elvis couldnt live a normal life - Amen - He belonged to the world - and he was used left right and centre - by any means -
....................................
If Only - we can only say this now - But His Legend /Name/Memory Lives Forever -

Long Live The King - We will never Forget Him -
He Surely left us his Legacy

Im sure going from the most handsome man in the world , and knowing it to becoming a mediocre and sickly looking dude would have been kind of puzzling , shocking and unfamiliar

I think this makes Elvis too much of a saint and a victim. Considering the extreme circumstances he was living under Elvis probably did better than what we normally give him credit for, but at the same time I think Elvis's worst enemy was himself.

..Yes it may be so egilj -
but please remember that Elvis couldnt save himself from himself - please think how much he performed , hi fame over took his status , Money couldnt buy what he needed most - he lost his mom who he truly loved at an early age jsut when his career was taking off to higher heights etc - His loss was so graet -it effected him thru out his Life - And Yes Elvis was a victim -100/00 in my opinion because every one close to him just used him for his fame etc - No on at the end could save him from himself - After all -He was human - Just like you and me and with fame and fortune his world was his oyster - Fame /Fortune swallowed him in the end - ::rocks

I think Elvis always had weight issues. You can see he was a bit porky in 1962, the Follow That Dream and Pot Luck publicity shots for example. He must have been pretty self-conscious about his weight, and his over dieting was as much an issue as his over indulgence. Look at some of the backstage photos from Vegas '69, he looks incredibly thin; too thin in fact. Just my opinion of course, others are available :smt023

:smt018
------------

Now, facial hair aside. Let's cut to the chase.

Elvis had a paralyzed colon, and this is responsible for most of the most serious apparent "weight" issues. He did, of course, always have a tendency to a bit of chubbiness - at least since '56. (But not before, as I can see.) During King Creole, and going into the service, he was definitely not skinny. And then after a relatively short time there, he was very skinny. I would say he was thinner in '57 than in '56, and that it's noticeable. And of course, in about '66, especially during Paradise, Hawaiian Style, he had put on weight, and it was a "wardrobe problem." This happened as they began Clambake, too, but then he had a worse problem: a big bump on his head from a nighttime fall, where he hit his head on the bathtub after tripping over a TV cord.

Then, when things started to look up, he was thin again, getting really skinny by mid-'69. I read in one of the official fashion books, that they had a hard time finding an adult male mannequin for the suit he wore at the press conference, because he was so thin. So, during this whole "normal" time, it went up and down. I'd say that in '73, it was likely "weight" -- and just weight, because it did come off. And he started the year very thin, for Aloha. But whatever happened after that, it started to be something else. The paralyzed colon was found on autopsy; Nick does not dispute this - he just disputes the cause. The guy who held it in his hand said that no amount of dieting could have helped him. He was in need of critical medical treatment for this. Also, there was likely liver problems, although some claim that was exaggerated. In any event, if one has serious liver problems, abdominal swelling is a notable symptom. There is fluid build-up that can make one look pregnant.

But mainly, it was his colon. And his use of steroids were no help at all. (Steroids are also VERY bad for glaucoma, so it's odd he continued to use them at all, but he did.) Those will distort the face: giving a "moon-faced" appearance.

His mother had very serious liver disease, btw.

So, it wasn't just putting a few pounds; his body was all messed up.

And, by the mid-seventies, he had no problem at all with facial hair. :smt002

Yes, of course.

Re: Was Elvis insecure/depressed about his weight?

Fri Nov 30, 2012 2:32 pm

Yes. Throughout his career he worried about it and it was a constant fight between his eating habits and taking medication to keep trim. His weight gain was noticable around the time of Follow That Dream, Paradise Hawaiian Style, Clambake and mid '73 onwards when it became as much a cause of ill health as bad eating. In the earlier periods it was just fat but by the mid '70's it was as much fluid retention and bloat.

In earlier periods he would watch his films saying "too fat, too fat" and then take diet pills and go on a crash diet. You can see this between Kid Galahad and Girls, Girls, Girls. However in the last years this no longer worked and I feel sure that his look caused him a great deal of dispair and depression.

You're bumping up against the truth there. Elvis and the cause of his demise, quick fix philosophy taken to the Nth degree.

In 1961 Elvis didn't use diet pills so he put some extrapounds. Maybe in the first part of 1962 used them to be slim for Girls! Girls! Girls! In the middle 60's he was a little bit heavy also, especially in PHS, Spinout and Clambake. But the real problem began in 1975, when for a time he abandoned his jumpsuits because of the weight gain. So I think he was depressed and even in his last days of his life Elvis tried to put weight down, maybe because he didn't eat anything in his last 24 hours and the drugs taken on an empty stomach contributed to his sudden death.

You cannot eat a pound of burnt bacon, fried butter on your penut butter sandwiches, ice cream, pizza, and fried pork chops smothered in gravy all in large quantities and not expect health problems or weight gain as you age. it's impossible. medication had only a small part in it.
