I ask because Elvis strikes me as a very humble man and not very judgemental. Not the kind who'd be totally obsessed with himself or his looks. His beloved mother Gladys was overweight, and he came to look like her towards the end, with the heavy, sad bags under his eyes and the weight...Makes one wonder if he cared or not.

His mom Gladys had same problem and she gained and lost weight during her life I guess - Its purely in his genes - He got it from his moms side -
During the mid 70s Elvis lost and gained weight -
This was purely due to the tours and the medication he was given by his doctors -
Elvis didnt pass away with drug abuse -like most stars do in todays society - He passed away from the bad advice and medication he was given .I truly believe in this - He was addicted to his life style - and not drugs - As a devoted /loyal Elvis fan for many years I truly believe in this -
Yes Elvis turned out to be a recluse and depresssive person during his latter years - The Industry he was in seriously used him - what I mean is
A- Vegas - was firstly his sanctuary he loved during his early years when he made his come back to Live performances - He surely attracted many fans to come to Vegas to see him perform - Since he couldnt reach them worldwide - But in latter years 75-76 he started to tire out and hated it - Just imagine it - folks and fans -
.You perform on same stage day in /day out - 2 - 3 shows a time -
You just do shows and get back to same suite - waited on hand and foot etc -
.......................................................
B . Elvis surely was contracted for many years to play Vegas -
He never had any vacations to get rest etc during his late years -
This was because he was payn off Colonels debt at various casinos etc at Vegas -r
i truly believe that heshould have rested during his latter years more often and took care of his well being and self .
................................................................
C. His advisors / Doctors took advantage of Elvis good nature - Elvis couldnt say No to any thing - He was too kind to upset any one and believed in many .
............................................................................................................
D. Elvis should have travelled and seen the world - you know as a worldwide mega star - Only if Colonel had a passport to travel - This way Elvis would have rested more criss crossin many states and countries and deserved the rest he was allowed - Instead he played in USA Only - This was due to bad management thru out his career - [/b]

Holly wood used him so did RCA And record moguls - Every one used him I feel and believe -

I think this makes Elvis too much of a saint and a victim. Under the extreme circumstances he was living under Elvis probably did better than what we normally give him credit for, but at the same time I think Elvis's worst enemy was himself.

Chris Roberts wrote:Yes. Throughout his career he worried about it and it was a constant fight between his eating habits and taking medication to keep trim. His weight gain was noticable around the time of Follow That Dream, Paradise Hawaiian Style, Clambake and mid '73 onwards when it became as much a cause of ill health as bad eating. In the earlier periods it was just fat but by the mid '70's it was as much fluid retention and bloat.
In earlier periods he would watch his films saying "too fat, too fat" and then take diet pills and go on a crash diet. You can see this between Kid Galahad and Girls, Girls, Girls. However in the last years this no longer worked and I feel sure that his look caused him a great deal of dispair and depression.
