Was Elvis insecure/depressed about his weight?

A question--towards the end, in '76, '77, was Elvis insecure or self conscious or depressed about his weight gain? I know some people can take becoming fat, even if they were slim as hell previously, in stride and even in pride--but I wonder how Elvis felt about his physical appearance in the last year or so? Was he working on or planning on losing the weight, from any accounts? Did he care?

I ask because Elvis strikes me as a very humble man and not very judgemental. Not the kind who'd be totally obsessed with himself or his looks. His beloved mother Gladys was overweight, and he came to look like her towards the end, with the heavy, sad bags under his eyes and the weight...Makes one wonder if he cared or not.

I don't think this fact would have been lost on Elvis at all. Looking in the mirror would have added significantly to his depression. Plus the press were very harsh on him 'fat and forty' etc.

Im sure going from the most handsome man in the world , and knowing it to becoming a mediocre and sickly looking dude would have been kind of puzzling , shocking and unfamiliar

but please remember that Elvis couldnt save himself from himself - please think how much he performed , hi fame over took his status , Money couldnt buy what he needed most - he lost his mom who he truly loved at an early age jsut when his career was taking off to higher heights etc - His loss was so graet -it effected him thru out his Life - And Yes Elvis was a victim -100/00 in my opinion because every one close to him just used him for his fame etc - No on at the end could save him from himself - After all -He was human - Just like you and me and with fame and fortune his world was his oyster - Fame /Fortune swallowed him in the end -

I think Elvis always had weight issues. You can see he was a bit porky in 1962, the Follow That Dream and Pot Luck publicity shots for example. He must have been pretty self-conscious about his weight, and his over dieting was as much an issue as his over indulgence. Look at some of the backstage photos from Vegas '69, he looks incredibly thin; too thin in fact. Just my opinion of course, others are available

Now, facial hair aside. Let's cut to the chase.

Elvis had a paralyzed colon, and this is responsible for most of the most serious apparent "weight" issues. He did, of course, always have a tendency to a bit of chubbiness - at least since '56. (But not before, as I can see.) During King Creole, and going into the service, he was definitely not skinny. And then after a relatively short time there, he was very skinny. I would say he was thinner in '57 than in '56, and that it's noticeable. And of course, in about '66, especially during Paradise, Hawaiian Style, he had put on weight, and it was a "wardrobe problem." This happened as they began Clambake, too, but then he had a worse problem: a big bump on his head from a nighttime fall, where he hit his head on the bathtub after tripping over a TV cord.

Then, when things started to look up, he was thin again, getting really skinny by mid-'69. I read in one of the official fashion books, that they had a hard time finding an adult male mannequin for the suit he wore at the press conference, because he was so thin. So, during this whole "normal" time, it went up and down. I'd say that in '73, it was likely "weight" -- and just weight, because it did come off. And he started the year very thin, for Aloha. But whatever happened after that, it started to be something else. The paralyzed colon was found on autopsy; Nick does not dispute this - he just disputes the cause. The guy who held it in his hand said that no amount of dieting could have helped him. He was in need of critical medical treatment for this. Also, there was likely liver problems, although some claim that was exaggerated. In any event, if one has serious liver problems, abdominal swelling is a notable symptom. There is fluid build-up that can make one look pregnant.

But mainly, it was his colon. And his use of steroids were no help at all. (Steroids are also VERY bad for glaucoma, so it's odd he continued to use them at all, but he did.) Those will distort the face: giving a "moon-faced" appearance.

His mother had very serious liver disease, btw.

So, it wasn't just putting a few pounds; his body was all messed up.

And, by the mid-seventies, he had no problem at all with facial hair.

You're bumping up against the truth there. Elvis and the cause of his demise, quick fix philosophy taken to the Nth degree.

In 1961 Elvis didn't use diet pills so he put some extrapounds. Maybe in the first part of 1962 used them to be slim for Girls! Girls! Girls! In the middle 60's he was a little bit heavy also, especially in PHS, Spinout and Clambake. But the real problem began in 1975, when for a time he abandoned his jumpsuits because of the weight gain. So I think he was depressed and even in his last days of his life Elvis tried to put weight down, maybe because he didn't eat anything in his last 24 hours and the drugs taken on an empty stomach contributed to his sudden death.

You cannot eat a pound of burnt bacon, fried butter on your penut butter sandwiches, ice cream, pizza, and fried pork chops smothered in gravy all in large quantities and not expect health problems or weight gain as you age. it's impossible. medication had only a small part in it.
