20 years ago on April 24,1992 CBS-TV aired "Elvis the great performances" in prime time. I didn't see this at the time, but the year before I bought both volumes on VHS. Was the tv broadcast any different from what was on the 2 tape sets? My husband watched it and said it wasn't that different except Priscilla was the host. Anyone have any memories of watching this on TV?

I never saw it on TV, but I bought a VHS version, complete with
Priscilla, in 1997, but it is only 92 minutes long.

Also, was this broadcast only once? My husband said he taped it, he just has to look for it, if he can find it, we'll watch it tomorrow night for the 20th anniversary.

I taped the special and have it somewhere at home. It was a good presentation of the VHS sets.

Anyone got this re-issue DVD from 2011 ? I've read that the footage quality has not improved at all from the previous 2002 release.

The 2002 DVD release was in three parts [on 3 DVDs] with a total running time of 2 hours 38 minutes [& no
Priscilla]

The CBS version of The Great Ferformances was indeed hosted by Priscilla instead of George Klein.
For me the most notable difference is a little bit more footage at the start of Unchained Melody.
In this version you see Elvis taking his seat behind the piano.
I have this one on VHS.

Thanks to all who have responded so far. My husband found the tape he recorded 20 years ago tonight and we are going to watch it! Wow has 20 yearsflown by that quick?! lol. I have the 2002 DVD that Rhino put out in a velvet box and it is 3 DVD's with the third being "From the waist up". I have not purchased the re-release of the 2 disc version and do not plan to, the 2002 dvd set does me fine and with 3 dvd's, is more bang for the buck. Still, does anyone know if the CBS TV version was ever aired again? Or was this just a one time broadcast?

Watched it last night with the husband and enjoyed it.For a twenty year old vhs tape of a program taped from TV,The colors were still sharp, the sound was hi-fi stereo and all in all was a joy to watch, and the commercials were cleanly edited out. I told him he did a good job taping it. 1992 seems so long ago! lol.

how would you compare it to the official release - did you like that cilla hosted it? I will be digging out my copy and watching it this weekend . i wonder if the quality stood the test of time. At the time i remember the media used to have more stories and specials on ELVIS , the best yaers were from 78-91 , you would always see stories on current affair, entertainment tonight, the morning shows etc , i taped all of that stuff and still have them on beta and vhs.
Didn't like her outfit LOL ...I thought she added a more personel touch to it, but seems to me she repeated alot of the same dialog that was originally done by George Klein. Maybe I'm wrong..I seem to remember alot of of specials circa 78-91. One that sticks in my mind is one , I think it was called "Desciples of rock n' roll" it concerned the Elvis fans but done in a kind of strange way...only saw it once in 1978 I believe. Anyway, Really enjoyed viewing that old tape last night. Still gonna keep the original release. My husband has some things I don't have and I have some things he doesn't have..He has more vinyl than I have and a zillion CD's and imports, so I have the best of both worlds in a way! Our Anniversary is coming up on May 1st by the way!

Out of my head i remember there is some different candid footage in the ex-wife version at the end....especially the b/w footage from the early 60s (1962?) Where he has a pencil in his hands and a cap on his head...and he waves with the pencil in his hands before he leaves...(from when and where is that footage?)....any way..thats about the difference in footage...

Are you sure it's not Ed Sullivan rehearsal footage?!

The VHS or now DVD versions were the ones to get. Much better presented.

The TV edit was slightly different. Haven't watched it in many years but I do recall a couple of clips from the 1977 show that aren't available elsewhere.

Boxcar didn't 'borrow' them for The Final Curtain?

If I recall correctly, didn't the TV Special version hosted by Priscilla have some of the candid color footage of Elvis at American Sound in 1969 with some of the musicians and Roy Hamilton? I also believe the TV Special edit with Priscilla hosting was also made available as a single VHS release.

To me the 2002 3 DVD release is pretty much the better of the two when comparing the 2002 set and the 2011 2 DVD set. The only thing good about the 2011 set is that it features some interviews with a number of people who were around Elvis quite a bit (I believe Scotty Moore, D.J. Fontana, Milton Berle,Gordon Stoker, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Sam Phillips). The 2002 set does feature two Easter egg hidden features (one being the theatrical trailer for "King Creole" and the other being the newsreel footage of Elvis in Las Vegas in 1956).

Thanks. This is one I missed. As I was feverishly preparing my dissertation for deposit, grading piles of essays, and getting evicted from where I lived, I done missed it. I never even saw that TV Guide listing.

I have all the DVDs and official tape versions. All's well that ended well.
Still watch frequently!

Still have a copy of that TV show somewhere in the basement. IIRC, it was german dubbed and was shown on pay-TV back then.

Is the 2011 release worth getting?
