Quick question but what is the stringed instrument used on the intro to this song? It just doesn't sound like a guitar to me.

I think it's a Sitar.

Sitar entered my mind but it was not in common use for several more years in pop music. It's also has harsher sting to it.

Is a dulcimer out of the question?

Grady Martin, Jerry Kennedy and Harold Bradley were guitarists on the 9-29-1963 Nashville tracking session, perhaps one of them used a technique to make their instrument sound like a sitar.

That would make sense. Thanks John.
