Publishing royalties on compilations

Just curious how royalties work with compilation LP/CD's with regard to them containing recordings from both pre and post-1973? (I'm not entirely certain "publishing" is the correct terminology...) Are the royalties split between the estate and Sony or are they divided based on the individual songs???

The Estate only gets royalties for 1973-1977 recordings.
No royalty is paid for pre-1972 recordings.
It probably means Sony pays x% of the total royalty to EPE i.e. in accordance with the % of 1973-1977 recordings used.

Composers' royalties is a different subject.
