"Love" is a somewhat incorrect description of my feelings. Anyway Doc, if you hate the song, why over-represent the number of people who "love" it? Surely there's room for a "meh" category.

I would say like more than love, but whatever.

A good song. Thank you for your input!

Played it the other day and I can confirm that I still hate it. It would have been far more tolerable without Felton's way over the top overdubs. That guy ruined many a possible passable 70's track with his meddling. Such a shame after his most promising start via the May 1966 sessions.

Allow me to reiterate my position. I love this song. Always have always will. To me, it's very dear.

I have to agree. Even when I was a full-time Elvis apologist I could not defend this song. I hated it the moment I heard it. It made my ears hurt real bad. Ouch.

Fortunately, Elvis At Stax: Deluxe Edition made me reexamine a session that I had mostly written off. There's a lot of great stuff that I had overlooked because of songs like "Love Song of the Year" and "My Boy." :)

But, of course, as with any music, there are infinite variables of reactions.

I like the way he sings it more than the words to it...the falsetto at the end is a nice touch..you can tell Elvis was getting into it...the unedited version is fun, when Felton says "That's a gas" and Elvis (still in falsetto), says, "Oh no!" He liked doing falsetto high notes on songs ("I'm Leavin'" being a prime example)

When it comes to music, it's all about the cold hard facts, right, Doc?

No, but facts are absolutely essential to assessing what Elvis did, when he did it, and why it is still important.

Facts are absolutely essential to assessing what Elvis did and when he did it. They are definitely important.

But, in the end, it is taste -- not facts -- that sells records.

To be honest...I never cared about this song..I remember when I was playing the Promised Land album I always lifted the needle when the song started and moved the tone arm to another song...

Hello,

Chris Christian did a live album in 1986 titled "Chris Christian Live at Six Flags (With Whiteheart)" that features a pop medley on side 2. Looking at the back cover of the album, it would seem that there was even a video of the concert that was sold too through Home Sweet Home Records. The album was manufactured and distributed by A&M Records / Home Sweet Home Records.

Here's an ebay listing of the album I'm talking about:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1986-CHRIS-CHRI ... _773wt_866

The pop medley consists of:

"Don't Worry Baby"
"I Go To Pieces"
"Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing"
"All Things Are Possible"
"When The World Runs Out Of Love"
"Telephone Lines"
"Love Song Of The Year"
"Back In My Life Again"
"I Want You, I Need You"
"Stouffers Jingle"
"Coca Cola Jingle"

Chris doesn't sing the entire "Love Song Of The Year" song. He only sings the last part in the medley.

I used to laugh when I should cry
I used to let these feelings pass me by
From now on I'll make it very clear cause I don't want to write
Another love song of the year

Anyone who criticizes these songs to the degree that some of you do,
are basically saying you have much better taste in music than Elvis did.
So, don't go there. Just because "you" hate it, doesn't mean someone
might find something in the lyric or melody that they relate to.
It doesn't mean you have great taste in music.

He choose to record it, and something in the song touched him to do so.
It wasn't as if he recorded anything they told him to, because
he was known for tossing demo's at the wall, and rejecting alot of stuff.

Of course making a movie and working on a song that fit a scene is another debate all together.

Great point. Unless one is an established recording artist, one cannot in any way make an assessment of a song.

Have you learned nothing from Marty Lacker? The songs being presented to Elvis after 1970 were horrid, due to the publishing deal aspect of the business. He tossed songs, yes, but they were worse pieces of turd than this probably.

If you have Spotify, you should be able to listen to the Chris Christian "Pop Medley" that includes "Love Song Of The Year" off the "Live At Six Flags" album here;

If you want to pick the album up or just the "Pop Medley" track from iTunes, here you go:

He continues to offer substantive insight day after day.

Don't put yourself too high on that pedistal smart-a$$.

You just helped make my point.

Keep playing them Neil Young records.

PS. I don't offer as much insight as I used to, because if what I say cannot be proven wrong, I am suspended. Jealousy is all around us.

Doc, did you find a copy? I omitted a song title by accident in my original post regarding the songs in the medley. There's a song titled "All Things Are Possible" between "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" and "When The World Runs Out Of Love."

I doubt anyone here thought there'd be a medley of songs that was professionally recorded that consisted of the Beach Boys classic "Don't Worry Baby," Peter & Gordon's "I Go To Pieces," Marvin Gaye / Tammi Terrell's "Ain't Nothing Like The Real Thing" and "Love Song Of The Year" with a few other numbers sprinkled in such as the Chris Christian song "Back In My Life Again" that was recorded by the Carpenters. Let alone performed by the songwriter of "Love Song Of The Year."

Here's a video of the Carpenters "Back In My Life Again"

Actually, I've listened to this medley quite a bit today and it's grown on me.

I should also mention Dann Huff, a noted session musician and producer, was a member of Whiteheart along with Dann's brother David. They both played on the aforementioned "Live At Six Flags" album.
