"With a humble heart". 2 more bog standard shows coming soon

Sun Oct 21, 2012 6:27 pm

Sunday, February 3, 1974 Dinner and Midnight Shows, Las Vegas Hilton, Las Vegas, NV

Straight Arrow Special Products
SA/SP 2012-11-02

Straight Arrow is continuing their popular collector's series of 2 shows from one evening, released in a single package. This time the producers have chosen two excellent performances from Sunday, February 3, 1974 at the Las Vegas Hilton.

On this collection there are worthy performances of revived songs like “Tryin’ To Get To You”, “Sweet Caroline” and a powerful “Polk Salad Annie”, The December ’73 Stax sessions are represented here with pleasant renditions of “Spanish Eyes” and “Help Me”. “An American Trilogy” is as powerful as ever and Elvis' passion for Olivia Newton-John’s “Let Me Be There” is evident too, with the ending being reprised in both shows.

As fans have come to expect from us, the tapes are of very good quality, sourced from early generation copies of the original cassettes. The double digipak contains liner notes and is filled with photos from the Montgomery, AL, March 6th, 1974 show, due to a lack of quality images from Presley’s January-February 1974 engagement.

As usual, these recordings have been carefully engineered to be presented in the best possible sound.

Tracks:

This is one of Elvis' most lackluste engagements; virtually the same set list every show, rushed versions, mostly 50 minutes duration, little dialogue and songs from 1970 brought back into the show again. The FTD of "I found my thrill" is plenty for me. I might buy this new one if it was £10 or under.

The musical quality is very good, though..he focuses on the music not on jokes with the audience.
Both debut on silver disc...especially the DS is very bad sound wise on the cdr floating around..so new
sources are guaranteed ..for fans of such stuff a must have in any case..a few songs were sung for the first time in this Vegas season as Help Me, Spanish Eyes or Let Me Be There,..also a challenge these days was Trying To Get To You, Trilogy or Fever..all in all not soo bad as mentioned above...
But right,..there were better Vegas seasons..but also worse..

The sound on the Dinner show is miles better than the poor CDR floating around.

A great many of Elvis' live performances in the '70s were "bog standard," so making a point of it here is unhelpful. As there are not a ton of quality recordings from Jan-Feb 1974, Presley tenth Las Vegas engagement, this release may be interesting for the hard core fan, if the audio is up to snuff.

Surely the fact that he brought back songs from 1970 is a bonus, not a hindrence to the show? I'd rather have Sweet Caroline than If You Love Me any day.

I never was a huge fan of this season, but I Found My Thrill is a very good show. I guess I'll wait to see if the reviews are good.

Straight Arrow always delivers when it comes to audience recordings, and this is no exception. However, I'm more of a soundboard/multi-track kind of guy, so I'll just pass on this one. It's just the way I roll.

What about performing some of the 30 plus songs he had only recently recorded during late '73??

I may not even listen to it. I'll probably spend the money and let it sit on the shelf.

I love to squander every chance I get.

No idea either. But the track listing for these shows see early appearances of material from december 1973 and what is it? Spanish eyes! To be fair, Help Me also gets an outing, which is somewhat better. We tend to overlook the fact that a number of new songs entered the repertoire during this season - Help Me, Spanish Eyes, Let Me Be There, Why Me Lord, My Baby Left Me and the Blueberry Hill bit of I Can't Stop Loving You. Add to that the return of Sweet Caroline and You;ve Lost That Lovin' Feelin and that's quite a high percentage of the show changed.

OK I'll put it another way. Is bog format recordings of certain Elvis concerts just restricted to Elvis or was it also applied to other artists ? I think it's just a myth to entice Elvis '70's mugs to buy audience recordings. Bog for now :smt006
