It happens every year (Michael Robert Jarrett)
With an edited 1 st verse and re-written lyrics the song is recorded with the title “I’ll be home on
Christmas day”. Copyright for It happens every year 21-01-71.

Other songs by Michael Jarrett with copyright on the same day:
Chute No 2 - Chasin’ money - All goin’ down together - Morning of october.

It’s unknown these songs were offered to Elvis for recording early 1971.

Early 1971 Hill and Range updated the copyrights from these old songs (original copyright in 1944) written by Thomas A. Dorsey:

I’ll never turn back
I’m goin’ to wait until my change shall come
Take me through Lord
What could I do if it was not for the Lord

+ Jesus is risen - written by Virginia Davis.

The songs are probably selected for for may / june 1971 sessions?
Anything known about a songselection for these sessions?

I don’t know; through the years demo-versions were released on all kind of (official / unofficial) releases.
Sometimes these tracks were added as bonus.

Clambake
A few demo versions are known written by:

– Winfield Scott (there’s a clip on YT);
– Gerald Nelson;
– Doc Pomus;
– Randy Starr;
- Sid Wayne-Ben Weisman = recorded.

I shouldn't be surprised if more versions come to daylight.

Bruce demoed the song in June of 1977 (June 17th to be precise) during the initial days of the sessions for Darkness on the Edge Town LP. Some of the lyrics were bluffed. Bruce would have had to have acted quickly to send to Elvis. Here's the demo.

I doubt that Elvis would have sung it.
Bruce, like many others had stopped at a 50/60 vision of Elvis that was too old and outdated and did not reflect what he was as a man and artist in the second half of the 1970s.
Especially vocally, Elvis had gone far beyond these things.
