Is this song about Elvis?

Probably not...but for fun "the number one fan of the man from Tennessee" sounds like it has an Elvis reference.

Dave Loggins - Please Come To Boston (Epic 11115, 1974)

Please come to Boston for the springtime
I'm stayin' here with some friends and they've got lots of room
You can sell your paintings on the sidewalk
By a café where I hope to be workin' soon
Please come to Boston
She said no, would you come home to me

And she said, hey ramblin' boy, why don't you settle down
Boston ain't your kind of town
There ain't no gold and there ain't nobody like me
I'm the number one fan of the man from Tennessee

Please come to Denver with the snowfall
We'll move up into the mountains so far that we can't be found
And throw "I love you" echoes down the canyon
And then lie awake at night till they come back around
Please come to Denver
She said no, boy, would you come home to me

And she said, hey ramblin' boy, why don't you settle down
Denver ain't your kind of town
There ain't no gold and there ain't nobody like me
I'm the number one fan of the man from Tennessee

Now this drifter's world goes 'round and 'round
And I doubt that it's ever gonna stop
But of all the dreams I've lost or found
And all that I ain't got
I still need to cling to
Somebody I can sing to

Please come to L.A. to live forever
California life alone is just too hard to build
I live in a house that looks out over the ocean
And there's some stars that fell from the sky
Livin' up on the hill
Please come to L.A.
She just said no, boy, won't you come home to me

And she said, hey ramblin' boy, why don't you settle down
L.A. can't be your kind of town
There ain't no gold and there ain't nobody like me
I'm the number one fan of the man from Tennessee

I've always taken it as a reference to Elvis. If it's not Elvis, then who? Pat Boone?

Sam Phillips, perhaps?

Bobby "Blue" Bland?

Isaac Hayes?

It's obviously Davy Crockett

Though as an Elvis fan it's tempting to see one, there's no Elvis reference there. As the boyfriend travels around, trying to find a new place to live, and tries to convince his girlfriend back in Tennessee to come and join him, she always tells him to come back home because he's a Tennessee man and she's his No. 1 fan .

Great song, by the way!

Hmmm. Yeah, I suppose that's one way to read it that makes sense. If it is an Elvis reference it is kind of sticking out there by itself without anything else to hang it on.

Elvis' favourite female singer, Anne Murray, says this is her favourite song. It led to her seeking out Dave Loggins to record their hit duet, Nobody Loves Me Like You Do.

I think I'm gonna cry. Elvis heard this, of course.
And ya know what? It seemed to get more airplay in 77-78. I know it did. I kept hearin it in my private way,but wondered why they were playing it so much again. Surely no one thought what I did!

Thanx again.

Well, that's the way I've always interpreted it. There's a lot more to Tennessee than Elvis.

Most people down south {who I knew} thought George Jones's "He Stopped Loving Her Today" was about Elvis. When it debuted on country radio, I called the DJ in the middle of the night to tell him it would go straight to number one {country}. He was like "how do you know . . . you are absolutely sure?" I told him "trust me on this." It did.

I only explained it to him after it topped the chart. He then claimed that he had guessed it. Maybe. But females reacted with passion. I know cause I asked people if they liked it and why.

There is no doubt that any rock musician from Tennessee who releases a 1974 single with that lyrical hook is thinking of Elvis.

You were calling country radio DJs in 1980?

Tuscaloosa is a small town. Some nights, we'd chat for a couple hours while he spun the discs {or inserted those radio thingies}.
He was a recent graduate of Bama who also had majored in Communictions and this was his first job after graduation. He was on the night shift and I guess he was lonely.

I wrote about music for the paper and he was "a fan" or so he said when I told him my name/byline.
I wanted to be a newspaper writer, but my folks pressured me to go to grad school. "Something to Fall back on."

Swear to God, Priscilla was IN DANGER when that song was out! It would be on in a store and the dialogue I heard from women! These were actual adults, not college kids. I won't repeat but you get my drift. Not something you forget. This WAS the deep south, understand.

P.S. I would ask the college kids. Didn't have to ask the others.
