Re: Superior Outtakes versus Master Studio Recordings
There are many good undubbed masters from the 70's that I play regularily. Not because I find them superior to the masters, but because I like the more stripped down feel to them. More Elvis so to speak.
But, one stand-out in my book is take 8 of Shake, Rattle And Roll. That's the one I use for my personal playlists. Other than that the fast version of Ain't That Lovin' You Baby is almost like a different song, but I like both this one and the original. Summer Kisses, Winter Tears take 2 and Amazing Grace take 2 are also favourites a.o.

I've been doing the same thing lately, listening to the undubbed masters from the 70's...bajo wrote:There are many good undubbed masters from the 70's that I play regularily. My ex girlfriend once asked me why they ruined the songs with all those added instruments on the originals... she, a non-Elvis fan, enjoyed the stripped down versions very much, they sounded more modern, she said.

Oh and the alt take of Follow That Dream on Command Performances is better than the master, IMO.

Re: Superior Outtakes versus Master Studio Recordings
The alternate master of 'Long Legged Girl' featured on the TTAF BMG 4 CD Boxset turns quite a dreadful song into something very good indeed. This is probably the most dramatic example for me.
Another one from the same film is 'There's So Much World To See' - ie the bluesy version. However the master is pretty good too.

The spoken part with the sigh just gives the song so much more feeling!

Not that the lyrics are good, but I like the outtake with the very different sounding Hey, Little Girl on the Harum Scarum FTD much better than the master. It rocks!

Re: Superior Outtakes versus Master Studio Recordings
I strongly disagree. The master is superior. I hate that the alternate gets played so much because it's in stereo.TINML wrote:Oh and the alt take of Follow That Dream on Command Performances is better than the master, IMO.
Always On My Mind, from the On Tour mock session, isn't really an outtake, as it was recorded subsequent to the record session, but I agree it is far and away my favorite version. Just lovely. All the alternates we've heard on FTD are outstanding. I'd say EP clearly liked this song.

I agree. The alternate take just isn't right - the Jordanaires come in slightly late (or early, can't remember!) at one point and it just all sounds as if it needs more work.stevelecher wrote:I strongly disagree. Give me the mono master any day. Everything is right on it and Elvis's voice just soars. It's one of my absolute favourites and it's just a pity that it's too short.

I agree! Follow That Dream should have been a few verses longer. It's that kind of song you never want to end....Steve Morse wrote: Give me the mono master any day. Everything is right on it and Elvis's voice just soars. It's one of my absolute favourites and it's just a pity that it's too short.

Off-topic but: those are some good-looking ladies in the picture with you, Jimmy!
Joe Krein interview with Sherril Nielsen: "YOU KNOW YOU FORGET HOW GOOD HE REALLY WAS. I SAID MY GOODNESS. YOU KNOW WHEN YOU ARE WITH HIM YOU ARE SO WRAPPED UP DOING THE SHOW, BUT HERE NOW 20 YEARS LATER, I HEAR HIM AND REALIZE WHAT A GREAT TALENT HE WAS. HE WAS THE REAL DEAL.

Not sure why the master was chosen over the first pristine take of Bridge Over Troubled Water... it's dynamite!

I cannot go past It's Easy For You - vocal more up front less orchestrated overdubs.

So listen to the undubbed master on the Moody Blue FTD. You'll find it is superior to take one.

Then it wouldn't be the classic Elvis performance it is and would probably be forgotten today.Johnny2523 wrote:what if elvis recorded the version bruce did?bajo wrote:I agree!
