I like the august 70 versions better.tcb4 wrote:hello

But 14/2 Aloha version is good as well....and thankfully its "much" longer than 2 days earlier.
Re: song "something" in aloha
Elvis's performance of Something during Aloha was banal and listless, IMO . . . He does absolutely nothing with the song, merely drags along with the most dreary, ineffectual of vocals and humdrum arrangement. His 1970 performances of the song were superior, and even though the arrangement was nigh-on the same, Elvis's vocal was stronger and more sincere . . . A quality wholly lacking during the Aloha version.

Re: song "something" in aloha
yes but that can be said about many songs on this event, not just the 50s covers IMO....its no secret that I have never liked the aloha shows mostly due to elvis` voice during this time in his life.greystoke wrote:Elvis's performance of Something during Aloha was banal and listless, IMO . . . Re: song "something" in aloha
"Something" was never an Aloha highlight for me. If you're looking for an adjective, "ordinary" comes to mind.
On the other hand, I remember the 1970 version being quite the revelation to me when I first heard it on the Walk A Mile In My Shoes set way back when.

Re: song "something" in aloha
The Aloha version of Something is passionless and perfunctory. Elvis sounds like his heart just isn't in it. Which it probably wasn't. I wouldn't say he throws the song away, but he doesn't sound like he's into it. He sounds indifferent.
On the original lp the tuba mixed so annoyingly high sounded like a fart!

Re: song "something" in aloha
I think he was concentrating more on looking cool than putting forth a great effort vocally on "Something", but I've always enjoyed hearing the Aloha version anyway.
It was on "Steamroller Blues" where I thought he sounded weak.
However, his voice did get stronger as the concert progressed.

Re: song "something" in aloha
I've heard cd's from 1970 when he sang the song very well. But in aloha he puts NO effort in the song. Its pretty much a throw away. And I don't understand why he would not but much effort on songs in that worldwide concert?

Re: song "something" in aloha
I just watched the performance again on YouTube and I would describe Elvis as sounding tired and seeming a little nervous which is very understandable.
He put forth more effort on the next song "You Gave Me A Mountain" (mostly because the song itself demanded more effort).
I've always wondered how Elvis would've approached the two Aloha performances if Priscilla had announced to him a few days earlier that she wanted to return to him. Hmmm.

Re: song "something" in aloha
He was still quite nervous at that point, as evidenced by the crack in his voice when he says "We're gonna try to do all the songs you wanna hear." (Which, by the way is followed by an orgasmic response from a female audience member.)

Re: song "something" in aloha
I wonder if the intention of doing this song was more or less to say that he likes The Beatles and not so much to put any effort into the song? I must say though this was the first version I ever heard and grew to like it. I felt the 1970 version was too rushed in comparsion but that's just me. However I will also say that the Elvis version was also the first version of Something I ever heard. It was years later when I became a big Beatles fan and can totally understand where everyone is coming from on how he does not sound into it. I was shocked when I finally heard Harrison's version of it in comparison to Elvis' version.
In regards to Something being performed in 1973, was this one of the last few times it would be performed live or were there several more times? It seemed like some of the songs he did for Aloha would never be heard very often again such as I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry, Something, and Welcome to My World????

Re: song "something" in aloha
I enjoy the song from the ALOHA REHEARSAL –– it's a tad better; you can also here the audience clearer and the whole rehearsal concert is very enjoyable too.
Great to have them both on a DVD.
I think maybe 1970-71 versions are the best.
