I like Flaming Star, but it's nice to hear Black Star because it was intended for the movie when it was under a different title as well. I like hearing the before and after involving his music.

Thank God somebody picked up the fact that you can't see a black star before Elvis would look like fool!

Elvis Presley was inducted into the Los Angeles Indian Tribal Council by Native American Wah-Nee-Ota after portraying the son of an Indian and a white settler in this film.(from internet movie database)

Flaming Star -- a really terrific performance of a very good song that's not too dissimilar in feel to Johnny Preston's version of Running Bear, but has darker undertones that reflect the picture from which it came. The drum beats are supeb and Elvis's vocal of parts shade and colour really brings the lyrics to life. Black Star is also good, but doesn't flow quite as well, IMO . . . But it's an interesting counter-point to a great theme song for an underknown gem of a picture that featured some of Elvis's best acting.

I prefer "Black Star". I always thought his singing and the background music had a sparse, dark sound that fits well with thy lyrics.
I like the structure of both....there is sort of a "middle 8"....."gotta lot of living to do...." that breaks up the song a bit. Wonderful track!!!

As Kiwi said, "Black Star" made no sense. "Flaming Star" was the better choice.

"Black Star' was pretty exciting to hear when it appeared on bootleg in the 90s. It was not well-known Elvis had cut this. That said, "Flaming Star" is a more evocative film title, and lyrically it fits the rhythm and meter of the song much better, the third syllable makes all the difference.

I like "Flaming Arrow"! I love it when Thorne Nogar noted it as the title during the Flaming Star session and Elvis chides him for renaming the picture again.

Of course it makes sense; a "Black Star" is a Black Hole! (Well, it was: now there is a more complex classification of related phenomena.) And everyone knows their monstrous gravity gobbles up anything that comes close. Our "Flaming" star, which is the sun, is a very good thing. It is the source of our life. Well, ok, God created the Universe in some fashion, and then BOOM! Big bang. And our sun appeared at some point, etc., etc., etc.

So, "Black Star, keep behind me . . ." Yeah! Cosmology!

P.S. From Wikipedia:
"Black star (semiclassical gravity), a theoretical star built using semiclassical gravity as an alternative to a black hole"

P.P.S. -- And the appearance of a "black star" caused all this.

(According to Shatner's book about Trek science, the show displayed the name and concept before the first academic presentation.)

So, stay away from a "Black Star"!! (Should be pretty easy, for now.)

Ev'ry man, has a flaming star
A flaming star, over his shoulder
And when a man, sees his flaming star
He knows his time, his time has come

Flaming star, don't shine on me, flaming star
Flaming star, keep behind me, flaming star
There's a lot of livin' I've got to do
Give me time to make a few dreams come true
Flaming star

When I ride, I feel that flaming star
That flaming star, over my shoulder
And so I ride, front of that flaming star
Never lookin' around, never lookin' around

Flaming star, don't shine on me, flaming star
Flaming star, keep behind me, flaming star
There's a lot of livin' I've got to do
Give me time to make a few dreams come true
Flaming star

One fine day, I'll see that flaming star
That flaming star, over my shoulder
And when I see, that old flaming star
I'll know my time, my time has come

Flaming star, don't shine on me, flaming star
Flaming star, keep behind me, flaming star
There's a lot of livin' I've got to do
Give me time to make a few dreams come true
Flaming Star
