"Memories" is a sappy ballad. Ranks right up there with "My Boy".

I tend to steer clear of the abused "My Boy" punch line but "Memories" sits on a different level by far. Yes, it is a syrupy ballad but it is beautifully sung by Elvis in 1968, one of his very best vocal pieces. The musical arrangement is also one of the earliest "adult contemporary" sounding tracks associated with Elvis. "My Boy" on the other hand is over sung and overblown in comparison. Not the worst from those December Stax sessions but nowhere near the best either.

I wasn't knocking "Memories". Sometimes I love syrupy ballads - that happens to be one of them, along with "My Boy", "It's Midnight", "Don't Cry Daddy", and "The Wonder of You" - to name a few.

"My Boy" and "It's Midnight" are hardly syrupy ballads. They are over-blown, bombastic, exploding ballads on steroids. Jarvis' arrangement and production of those numbers are horrendous. There is nothing sensitive or tasteful about either arrangement.

The first minute of It's Midnight is great, then Kathy W opens her mouth, the massed pipes and band and choirs kick in and destroy it.

The ending is horrific.

You're right. When "It's Midnight" first gets going, there is some potential. And then it starts to get derailed before finally becoming catastrophic.

apparently El thought My Boy was tasteful enough to perform and release, and Jarvis` arrangement got the OK from the king as well. It`s one thing to say you don`t like a song, that`s perfectly fine, we all have our tastes, but if we are judging the arrangement and production values, I think I`ll have to go with the king`s judgement rather than a a fan`s.

You're confusing the two... the movie version was recorded while Elvis was having one of his sleep walking episodes...

"How’s The World treating you?" has some great guitar playing by Scotty and that's why it shouldn't be included here. Elvis made some very poor song selections in the 1970's but I don't really hate any of them.
