Elvis Complete Masters Box How is the Lene Reidel mastering?

Post by monkboughtlunch »

How is the Lene Reidel mastering on discs 28-30? Reports are that the liner notes credit Reidel for mastering the Rarities discs 28-30. From the Steve Hoffman Forum:

"Discs 28-30 (the "rarities" discs) were mastered by Lene Reidel. And it separately credits "Disc 1: Thanks to Kevan Budd "for his research, restoration, and additional mastering on Elvis' Sun recordings."

According to one poster on one of the other threads about this set, "Tweedle dee" and others sound 'worse' than the many previous issues of this same material.

I haven't played the latter discs yet! only played disc 1 and 15.Disc 1 sun tracks are excellent the best i've heard them, but the speedway tracks on disc 15 sound no better to me than previous releases,Infact the best sounding speedway tracks i have heard were on my original vinyl album! I'm not one of these fans bashing which engineer mastered which tracks, I believe its how the original track was recorded.

I'm not ready to assess everything.

My opinion is Lene does OK with decent source material, but her approach to problems seems to involve a hammer -- a 10-pound sledgehammer.

For sure, it's not all a straight copy of past work, though.

Yikes! I wish Jorgensen had pushed for Vic Anesini to remaster the 3 rarities discs in the box (28-30). Vic is awesome. A missed sonic opportunity on a definitive box set. I don't think anyone would count Lene Reidel in the top tier of the best mastering engineers. Given a primary differentiator / selling point of this box set is the sonic upgrade of the masters by Anesini, it seems odd that Lene Reidel's mediocre mastering skills would be employed for this release, albeit on only 3 of the CDs.

Reidel's continued involvement with the catalogue is somewhat of a mystery, particularly on a release of this magnitude.

Perhaps Reidel has some incriminating photos of Jorgensen? :smt002

The rarities sound fine to me. Sure, some hiss is quite noticeable here and there,
but I'd rather have some hiss instead of having it denoised to death.

Obviously, many of these rarities were recorded under less than perfect circumstances,
and you can't expect miracles with these. But like I said, they sound fine to me, and in
a few cases I was pleasantly surprised,

lol, then here's a novel idea to the Reidel bashers , don't buy the releases. If the sales are poor that will send a message to Jorgensen and SONY to "Move over Ms R".

Why can't the wacker earlier on this thread be a little more specific as to which songs on disc 28-30 he felt were poor ?

My guess is that Lene and Ernst are really "close". That's all I'm going to say on this matter.

Hiss is a good thing in most cases. I'm A Roustabout is on cd 28 and the sample that elvissessions uploaded sounds better than the 2nd To None cd so it can't all be bad. Dark Moon is a disappointment but you can't win them all.

I must say something here, I think Lene Reidel's mastering is probably one of the worst Sony/FTD ever release, and we have to put up with it just so EJ can continue to get his regular BJ. This is not on, and this has to be spelt out to Ernst. This is a conflict of interest, we all know the mastering by Lene is of the opinion of many others to be in a word, utter rubbish, but as long as he needs her for his pleasure, Elvis mastering is going to take a toll for the worst. Ernst, shame on you, get your priorites right!. :(

But do you think BJ has ever had an EJ? What about OJ?

We all know that you "know your stuff," so we all await your reply on EJ, BJ, OJ and Lene.

Don't think for one minute that we don't appreciate it.

There are other Elvis forums more suited to your 'contributions', why not give one of them a try. Thanks.

This thread is in poor taste and is turning into the inevitable witch-hunt I thought it might have when I logged on. You guys can do better than this.

I almost want to start an Anesini vs. Reidel thread with sound samples and everything. In most cases the differences are smaller than one might think.

Go for it! Some fans need to be brought by down to earth on this one.

Poor sales won't remove Reidel from future work, poor sales will alter the course of future archival projects.

I have many times pointed out that Reidel's work isn't uniformly atrocious - but there has been enough inconsistency over the years to warrant the question as to why she was involved with a project of this magnitude with a primary focus on sound quality. Frankly, I don't care as I did not order this set, but it is an interesting situation.
