Why the secrecy:
"Nielsen SoundScan is an information and sales tracking system created by Mike Fine and Mike Shalett. Soundscan is the official method of tracking sales of music and music video products throughout the United States and Canada. Data is collected weekly and made available every Wednesday to subscribers, which include executives from all facets of record companies, publishing firms, music retailers, independent promoters, film and TV, and artist management."

Then couldn't someone on this board just get the info from someone associated with a music retailer?MikeFromHolland wrote:Why the secrecy:

So, we have the "Best Of Love" comp very quitely closing in on 800,000 units so far, that's good.

Christmas Time Is Here: It's time to say hello to the Christmas albums on the Catalog chart again, as Elvis Presley's "It's Christmas Time" is the first one out of the gate this year at #23 Catalog. It's not unheard of to have Christmas albums on the October charts. Two years ago, Michael W. Smith's "It's A Wonderful Christmas" was on the charts in the last two weeks of October (and was even #1 on October 30). In 2009, "The Taylor Swift Holiday Collection (EP)" was on the chart by the end of October, and Josh Groban's "Noel" accomplished the feat in 2008 and 2009. There were no Christmas albums on the chart at the end of October last year, but a couple of albums showed up for an odd week in September: Susan Boyle's "The Gift" and Anuna's "Christmas Memories".

Re: SoundScan (US) sales-figures
It's Christmas Time already selling/charting and only late October. Will be a very good season for this title. Be interesting to see how the "new" comp, The Classic Christmas Album, sells.

Thanks for the update, Brian. It's Christmas Time is actually Elvis Christmas Album (1970 Camden) with a different cover.

Unfortunately not. The source has dried up until further notice. However, going on previous rate of sales for 'An Afternoon In The Garden' and 'The Essential Elvis' (2CD) I have made a conservative extrapolation and estimate their sales as of this week are:
'An Afternoon In The Garden' - 498,098 Units. Estimated GOLD qualification within 2 weeks.
'The Essential Elvis' (2 CD) - 972,734 Units (including double sales under RIAA rules). Estimated PLATINUM qualification around March, 2013.
The Christmas Duets sales are difficult to predict but as of 8th September, 2012 were 490,322 Units.
Of course, as already stated these figures are merely guestimates.

Great extrapolation, but not conservative enough as neither AITG nor TEE are selling more than 1,000 copies a week. Incredibly, the one which is selling now, landing inside the top 130 albums in the US, as of this week, is "It's Christmas time", which is already certified as 3X Platinum by the RIIA and has sold over a million since Soundscan.

Thanks Jaime. As you will aready be aware it is a couple of months since we had Soundscan sales figures for AAITG and TEE and I was basing my extrapolation on weekly sales of 1200 for both whose sales prior to that date were arount 1300 to 1500. Anyway shouldn't be long now.
As you say 'It's Christmas Time' is the one doing well at present and as of this week rises from 149 to 125 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart; from 14 to 12 on the Catalog Album Chart and from 7 to 6 on the Holiday Album Chart.
Hopefully 'Christmas Duets' will be near GOLD status by the end of the Festive season.

Sheesh, killed the "I Am An Elvis Fan" cd as far as chart position goes. I was in the store last nite and looked for the new 2012 christmas comp, but was nowhere to be found, but boy, were their plenty of stock of, "It's Christmas Time" cd's !
Within time, I predict 4x Platinum for that disc. Unreal.

Re: SoundScan (US) sales-figures
Hey Buddy, i just checked the usual website, and someone posted a Soundscan set of results, country albums and the like, and I found one which landed at the 93 position in the Billboard 200 with, take this, selling exactly 5,000 copies this week. Now, if the one which landed at 50 had 7,800, something like that, I'm not sure, then that means It's Chrstimas time, which landed at 87 should have sold 5,300 this week, more or less. What do you think, buddy?Brian Quinn wrote:'It's Christmas Time' jumps from 125 to 87 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart for w/e 17th November, 2012. The following indicates that the No.50 on the Billboard Top 200 Album Chart for this week to have sold 6659 units:
http://www.hitsdailydouble.com/sales/salescht.cgi
Should this be correct and your figure of 5,000 for the No.93 position also then I think you are in the correct ball park. The above figures would indicate 5,270 units sold for ICT.
Well spotted.

Re: SoundScan (US) sales-figures
Hi Brian!! i was looking at another thread, and someone mentioned that "Prince from another planet" (PFAP, from now on, LOL) had a huge amount of pre orders, that being the cause of its release only on Tuesday, SONY could not at first meet the demand, and that it will be a top 40 hit, in the US and elsewhere. So, this morning I looked again at Amazon, and it is still inside their 40, (a week ago at 400, yesterday afternoon at 45, last night actually 38, this morning at 35). This last climb comes on the heels of three clever ads, one for a clip of Suspicious Minds on "Rollingstone", the other two from those launched in both TIME and The Wall Street Journal with a clip on "That's all right"). ,And I say clever because those three websites I just mentioned are read by lots of people, and they have remained, throught the years, very prestigious unlike say, People, or Entertainment tonight or USA today, to give similar examples of prior ads of other releases by EPE.
Now, since it has a video disk, I'm willing to bet that would qualify it to enter in some kind of video chart as well. Moreover, since video disks sell less than normal CD's on the average, (probably because they are USUALLY more expensive) I'm inclined to believe its position in video charts will be SOMEWHAT higher. I suggest we Look for the video charts next week, as well, since we may have a number 1 on the works, BECAUSE OF THE HUGE AMOUNT OF PRE-ORDERS. What do you think?/

If it doesn't become a Top 40 in the U.S., you'll be gravely disappointed. I'm hopeful it will be a grand spectacular success, but this is very misleading information.

I agree we will need to look out for the DVD Charts in the next couple of weeks. It is difficult to predict the opening chart position for PFAP in the U.S.A. due to the increased number of new releases vying for the Christmas share of the market. I would hope for a Top 50 entry but it must be remembered that the Billboard Charts are compiled from Soundscan sales and radio airplay. As we both know, Elvis receives very little airplay in the U.S.A.
As regards the UK I expect an initial entry at the lower end of the Top 100.
