"One Night" is one of Presley's great rockers to be sure, but it's really hard to hear and see this June 1977 performance, when you can click a button and watch him cruise at half-speed, but with some bite, through the same number in August 1970 or sit stunned as he absolutely tears down the walls with his June 1968 Burbank performance.

In Madison, Wisconsin, our guy sounds nasally and tired, and really doesn't look well. Elvis still loves the song, but this is the best he can do. It's sad.

The old humour is there, though, when he sings "I ain't never, I ain't never did no wrong, MUCH" about halfway through.

The 1968 and 1970 versions of "One Night" are fantastic. In 1977 Elvis was no longer able to deliver the song the way it should have been delivered. It's startling how much he changed in merely a few years and how different his voice sounded by 1977.

The '77 version is dire, even the band have little interest.

Actually, only the 1968 performances are fantastic. The summer 1970 versions find Elvis looking awesome, but just cruising through the Smiley Lewis tune, albeit with some of that post-comeback fire.

Don't be, it's all part of the Elvis History.

For an oldie, a la '77, it's not bad. And that's the Hurtin' Part.

For Elvis Presley, 1977, it's not good. And that's the part that really hurts.

I disagree. I love the high-energy 1968 version of "One Night," but I also think the 1970 version from TTWII SE is fantastic.

I think the version from the original movie from the August 12 MS is the better of the 2 performances we have from that summer 1970 Vegas engagement.

Yep. And at the very start of the song, Elvis does an early version of the 'Robot'.

Even the band seem to have regressed into playing lounge music as the whole thing is just tired and uninspired.

I need to go and give the classic '57 recording a spin now to recover

I quite enjoyed it and the way he threw the scarf made me laugh.

Give the man (Elvis) a break ! We all know what condition he was in, yet he could still sing. People will say uncontrolled, etc., etc. . . . but what the heck.

Too much hindsight, sometimes, on this forum.

One Night is one my favourite all time Elvis rock songs. I'll watch video or listen to audio of Elvis performing it no matter what year it is in. However, much like Elvis, its the 68 special version that has me standing up and paying full attention.

Indeed.

On the subject of the August 1970 recordings, visually the right version made the Special Edition (Aug 11th, MS), but it is interesting to note that all the other versions taped are much slower and groove better as a result. On record I find the August 12th, MS version the best, the only element missing being Elvis on his guitar!

phpBB [video]

I have to imagine if this had come during that portion of the show, it would step up a little, much like Love Me did between the Aug 11th MS and the Aug 12th MS.
