I recently got the region 2 dvd for Loving you.To my surprice it turns out to be a full screen presentation but when I saw the movie it looked to me that nothing was missing from the sides, in fact I got more picture than a widscreen!!
Check the pocket on Elvis suit. In region 2 you see the whole pocket and the button. But in region 1 you barely see it!!
same goes for the top 2 more lights in region 2.
But in region 1 on the left ,you see more from the letter A on the sign behind them and on the right you see were the sign ends!!
region 2
region 1
weird?!!

It may mean the producers of the DVD screwed up the aspect ratio for letterboxed format.

Are these both the NBC versions?
When you get to the point where you really understand your computer, it's probably obsolete

the region 2 is nbc, the region 1 I found it online. Could someone make a screen cap from region 1 to compare?

I have often wondered if they do this on purpose as a kind of "widescreen" scam.
They crop the top and bottem to make a fake widescreen.
So that missing stuff on the top and bottem shown on a 4:3 TV screen would appear as black bars.

When widescreen films that utilise the matte process (which masks off part of the camera frame and is then blown up to widescreen size, to avoid the distortions sometimes found in Panavision/Cinemascope) are shown in full screen, it reveals more of the picture than originally intended (sometimes revealing things such as boom mikes).

No, the film was shown in 1:85:1 widescreen ratio in cinemas.

so that means the "correct" version is a combination of both ?

No, the correct version is widescreen, not full screen. You are seeing more picture there than was intended.

so in away the full screen version is like a "uncut colectable" in this case.

Add to this the fact that the top photo (region 2) is out of its correct aspect ratio, with Elvis and Delores looking much too thin. It's like they tried to squeeze the full widescreen angle into the narrower 4:3 frame. Always hate that.
Seeing a few extra lights at the top doesn't do anything for me if the picture's not enjoyable to watch.

actualy the look thin beacuase when I take screen shots from my dvd player it tends to "push" the image "inside". also don forget that there is more picture from the downside
but in the end do you guys think I should keep this or buy a widescrren version?

this is a screen dump I made from the USA widescreen version - seems to me open matte ... looking at this DVD, it about time for a restored blu-ray !

this is better from the one I found. It seems that both have and missing the same amount of picture depending on the frame.Region 2 more picture on top and bottom.Region 1 more picture left and right. so in a way the ultimate picture frame could come from a combination of both!!

I'd like to own a version of "Double trouble" with The Weire Brothers 'squeezed out'!!
By the way, the word is spelt 'bottom' not 'bottem'!

Both examples have information missing. One from the sides, and the other from the top and bottom.
The top one also is too dark. Along with the aspect wrong.
Yes, a nice re-release is in order, considering its not in print anymore, and diffiult to find.

The r1 dvd is closer to 1.78:1 than 1.85:1. The OAR is 1.85:1 according to imdb. Not that it makes much difference...

Well, it's nice to get it right !

Imdb isn't always correct but I think it is in this case.
1.78:1 is the aspect ratio of a widescreen tv and the aspect ratio is not used for movies where 1.85:1 and the wider 2.40:1 are the most common used ratios today.
