Thanks for that !

Maybe Elvis inherited his singing talent from Gladys, then !

LOL Colin!

It's better than Jessie D Presley (see off topic thread)!

You can actually tell it's Vernon! Quite an endearing track.

Nice to hear.

It hadn't struck me before, but he was taller than Elvis.

Yes, although exactly by how much changes in many pics.

Billy Smith says Vernon was big at 6.2" His Mum was also tall at 5.7" to 5.8" and he says Elvis was 6 feet tall.

Good job Elvis was a twin as with Parents that size he could have ended up extremely tall, that wouldn't have been the same !

apparently he wrote the song too. Maybe this could be included on any future home recordings type FTD release as a bonus track if any more home recordings of Elvis' pop up.

Great idea for inclusion as a bonus!

Here's a longer version with some dialogue:

I'm guessing Mr P snr was a Hank Williams fan. There's certainly more than just a nod at Hanks songwriting style in there.

It's a fascinating listen. Elvis shared several vocal qualities with his father. Perhaps, in its own small way, Vernon's voice is also a snapshot of how dark and craggy EP's voice might have sounded at a similar age.

By the way, who wrote the song that Vernon sings here? It's got a lovely melody and lyrics -- a real fine composition! EDIT: Vernon wrote the song? With writing that good, Elvis should have gone to his father for some material!

It's supposedly written by Vern himself Cryo!

I really like it. Have listened it a few times. Even played guitar along with it.

Yeah! I just refreshed and put an "edit" in there. Had the window open a while and quickly submitted a post. I don't normally do that.

Everyone's entitled to one stupid mistake!

It's hard to believe -- if Vernon did write it -- that he stopped at that one song. Muse that good normally demands expression. Maybe more recordings will turn up one day?

Good call on Hank Williams, by the way. I was thinking that, myself, but I didn't want to say in case I was wrong. EP aside, country music is not my forte (though I certainly do listen to songs in that genre from time to time).

I believe in the introduction of the book "Elvis: Day By Day" by Peter Guralnick and Ernst Jorgensen they make mention that while they were going through Graceland's archives they found tapes of Vernon and Gladys singing. Ernst and Peter went on to make some commentary that one was a better singer than the other. I don't have the book in front of me to quote it directly. I want to believe that these tapes that Ernst and Peter were referring to were recorded around the same time as the home recording of "When The Saints Go Marching In" in December 1956.

Glad to know I'm not the only one who likes it. I hear some Elvis-like qualities in just the first few lines alone. It's really quite listenable. I even enjoy the grainy sound quality.

Alright, Vernon Elvis Presley! He sings with the soul of someone who's done some hard-living and knows a thing or two about soul and life. Elvis - a chip off the old block!

Right, right!

However, on the back of the CD -- per SLGM's second, longer YouTube link -- it says it was recorded in Vernon's office in 1973.

I did hear about this recording some time ago. In fact, there was a snippet making the rounds a year or two ago. It must have come with some spiel about when it was recorded. Hence the earlier assumption of mine.

Anything more with Vernon or Gladys would be appreciated. It's almost criminal to not release it!

Thanks for posting this, Guitar Man! I had heard just snippet before. Vernon was a good singer and yes, there's a hint of Elvis in there too.

I believe they said that Elvis got his talent from his father.

Might have been written by Dee. She was writing songs during this period.

If the man was not the father of Elvis Presley, no one would care a whit about this modest home recording. It's a nice, pleasant baritone, nothing more, nothing less.

Well done, Doc.

Unfortunately, your pithy comeback has been sharpened in the wrong direction -- if you aren't aware, Elvis was male and Amy is female, thus, you should have cited Janis, not Mitch.

Last time I checked, the recording in question involved a paternal influence.

If you aren't aware, Janis Winehouse is female, thus a maternal influence.
