Variety, too took a decidedly mixed view. “He still can’t sing. The words still are intelligible. But that never was very important,” Variety’s critic opined, “{because it is Presley’s suggestion of simple, unthinking, illiterate sex, his intimation that he isn’t going to bug you with hang-ups because he doesn’t even know he has them that gives him his appeal to the inexperienced.” “I don’t think many viewers care to see singers sweat on TV,” sniffed the Los Angeles Times reviewer. But Robert Shelton in the New York Times wrote a thoughtful review headlined “Rock Star’s Explosive Blues Have Vintage Quality.” And the ratings told an even better story. It may no longer have been possible to garner the 80% audience share that Elvis got when he appeared for the first time on the Ed Sullivan show, but the Singer Presents ELVIS was the number one show of the season and, with a 32.0 Nielson and 42% share, gave NBC its biggest overall ratings victory of the year.

68 Comeback – Not all the reviews were starry-eyed. The Hollywood Reporter , eyeing the informal segments disapprovingly, declared that at times “it looked as though someone had accidentally taped the rehearsal……For some unfathomable reason Elvis was set on a stage that did not look much larger than a two-by-four, jammed it with a four piece combo, and fringed it with squealing youngsters. As though this was not enough, Elvis was wrapped in leather from neck to foot and bathed in hot lights, the combination of which was enough to make the perspiration flow like tears….”
