just received the following mail and was wondering if anyone had heared about this and if there is a sound sample available:

RECENTLY DISCOVERED RECORDING OF PITTSBURGH 12/31/76!

WE'VE RECENTLY DISCOVERED A COMPLETE AND EXCELLENT QUALITY RECORDING OF THE HISTORIC PITTSBURGH 12/31/76 SHOW! THE ORIGIN OF THIS RECORDING IS A BIT HAZY BUT ITS PURPORTED TO BE AN EXPERIMENT TO RECORD FROM THE SOUNDBOARD, BUT WITH A DIFFERENT SOUND THAN THE USUAL. MY INFORMATION SAYS THIS WAS RECORDED WITH "AUDIENCE MICS" TO GET MORE OF THE REAL FEEL OF THE CONCERT. AND IT DEFINATELY WAS A SUCCESS! THE RESULT IS AN EXCELLENT RECORDING WITH A SOUND THAT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL YOU ARE THERE IN THE ARENA! IT DOESN'T SOUND EXACTLY LIKE YOUR REGULAR SOUNDBOARDS, BUT I CAN ASSURE YOU ITS GREAT! BETTER QUALITY THAN ANY RECORDING OF THIS SHOW I HAVE EVER HEARD! AND THE COMPLETE SHOW IS HERE ON 2 CDs. COMPLETE BAND INTRODUCTIONS,EVERYTHING FROM START TO FINISH! ALMOST 90 MINS! 36 TRACKS!
 it looks like Larry Patrick :!:

Wow, that's a swindler I haven't heard of in many years. Is he still "in business"? That's one to stay very clear of. As far as the double CD set goes, it would be an interesting listen if this were true, but it's probably not. I guess in due time we'll all know.

I was about to say the same thing. It's got the Arkansas Con Man written all over it.

It sure does have his name written all over it and I would bet my last dollar that that's exactly where it came from.

"If the songs don't go over, we can do a medley of costumes!" - Elvis Presley (August 10, 1970 backstage in his dressing room before the first show of the August, 10, 1970/September 8, 1970 season in Vegas).

And btw, the quality was in no way, shape or form close to a soundboard. It was better in some places than the Herman tape, and worse in others. The first 15 or 20 minutes of the recording are very heavy on the bass, distractingly so.

Yep, that is the recording.. And I agree it doesn't even come close to a soundboard.
That guy was largely responsible for the random songs Elvis did at the end of the show. He requested That's All Right and Reconsider Baby, and asked him to play the guitar. IIRC he also yelled out for Little Sister. During Can't Help Falling In Love, his buddy said (as if he was talking to a child) "He did ENOUGH for you!"

These dudes were sitting near John Herman, because you can faintly hear some of the audience members that are prominent on that tape. Interestingly, you can't hear these two guys on the Herman tape, though.

I don't have anything against ol' Larry. I've heard several horror stories about him, but about 30 years ago, he was a big help in getting my concert collection started. I never once failed to receive what I'd ordered from him.

Ah, yes. Audience recorded concerts on cassette tape. Those were the days.

So we are talking about the RTR tape? Did I get it right?

Personally, I'd be pleased to get this recording mastered in a reliable sound studio, even though it is far away from soundboard quality. This is overdue for a long time. To my opinion, the results would/could be stunning.

The FTD comes from the superb John Herman tape made on December 31, 1976, that first went out as an amazing 2 LP set around November 1977, less than a year later. FTD includes a fascinating portion near the very end, explicitly edited from that original bootleg, but also excises a few of the louder audience comments heard earlier in the evening.

Trust the doc -- he knows.

The original FTD pressing also contained some serious mastering errors on CD 1, which may explain why it was sold at the single CD price. Can anyone confirm if later pressings correct these mastering problems?

So there were later pressings?
FTD should have replaced our faulty discs damn it.

But all FTD 2CD sets have been sold at the same price as the single disc editions so that isn't the reason.

My favorite is the older sounding man. Elvis says he wants to introduce the members of his group, and without missing a beat he says, "Who cares?" He's also heard during the opening vamp. "C'mon Ellllllvasssssssss!!!!"

The girl that "replies" to the opening lines of Are You Lonesome Tonight is amusing as well.

"Don't tell me to play it. I will when I get ready. Do you understand me?"
