Yes, where would all those treasured concert scarves or sips of water be, if not for Charlie?
Keith Richards, Jr. wrote:For example, his voice sounds terrific on "I Will Be Home Again" and the seriously underrated "Beyond The Reef".
Seriously, Charlie did provide Elvis with some kind of feedback when it came to music.

He could play guitar and was very good with close harmonies. As far as home demos, or live performance preparation, Elvis did rely on him for a number of tasks. So Charlie wasn't just a sycophant.

IIRC, lead vocals on "Beyond The Reef" are by Red West, with Hodge and Presley providing support.
Keith Richards, Jr. wrote:He never uttered a bad word about Elvis either.
That's not a selling point, post-August 1977. Honesty is the best policy.

Plus Charlie Co-wrote 'You'll Be Gone', a very underrated song.

And the year before he and Red "inspired" the then-unissued "Plantation Rock" ... see their 1961 epic called "We're Gonna Have A Good Time."

Doh! Well, at least Mr. Hodge did add some gritty soul to the live versions of "Don't Cry Daddy". But Red West was a good singer too. I always did like that home recording of "Mary Lou Brown"...

About the best thing on the "Closing Night" FTD is Elvis' nice words about their singing.

Charlie Hodge rules.

You're just kidding here, aren't you ? Hodge was nothing more than a "yes" man..Elvis never took him seriously..his singing is just awfull..and I don't like him as a person.

Ok,I know that was rehearsed but it was a great moment.
It was great to have Elvis with an electric guitar.

But we didn't hear Scotty's playing after the swap !

And that was an integral part of sound on those early cuts.

They could have both had electric guitars, couldn't they ?

Charlie played an underated role in Elvis' live shows. As another poster mentioned, he was Elvis' go-to guy and moral support.
While I love Elvis on the 68 special, I agree with Colin that it would have been good to give it another go with a bit more professional backing

Yes, not try to repeat the whole thing, but they could have used that 'informal' format for something else.

As it was, they never did anything like it again.....................

You have no idea whether Elvis took him seriously or not because you weren't there. Yes, he was the court jester when everyone was around, but he was also Elvis' friend and was often introduced as such on stage. As for you not liking him as a person, did you know him on a personal level? I have to assume that you did because of your comment. What was he like away from the limelight? Did you guys ever have dinner and drinks together? Has he told you any good Elvis stories that we may not know? Please let us know about your personal experiences with him.

As far as his singing, he sounds pretty good on some recordings and not so good on others. If I were you, I'd stop saying he sounds "awfull." Since you can't spell it, I'm doubting that you even know what it means.

Have a happy!

Haha!

Now, that's funny right there. That there's funny, I don't care who you are.

If you don't think that's funny, you can get the hell out of here.

You're a funny man Rob, but I am not impressed at all in wait you say. It's my opinion. One more time: he cannot sing, was a horrible "yes" man and I don't like him...just deal with that, I am sure you can...

Have a happy!

You will get over that disappointment, I know for sure. You're a strong boy
I know him from records, from DVD's, from CD's, from books I did read and saw him several times at Fanclub days...overrated person in Elvis' his gang..

I don't reckon Elvis ever had better vocal backing than that by The Jordanaires !

Although those girls at the Stax sessions sure sang their butts off !

On stage, in the 70's, Kathy Westmoreland and The Sweets were good, too.
