Rijff's final contribution to Elvis in print...
A bit harsh maybe? What do you people think? Did Elvis headline in 10 silly movies in a row?
Sad to report that 'Inside Love Me Tender' is Rijff's very last book he has worked on...

Echoes Of The Past
Sunday morning. Amsterdam, December 1963.
Seated behind my father’s back on his 2nd hand Mopet bike, we crisscross thru Amsterdam.
Close behind us my brother on his bicycle. We’re heading for the Hallen Cinema.
I’ll be turning 12 in a couple o’ days, and going to the Cinema is a birthday gift from my parents to me. Love Me Tender is showing that Sunday. From the first moment my brother brought home a copy of the extended play, I had fallen in love with the photo that graced the cover. Damn, did he look cool posing against that fence!
Some 3 years earlier, the three of us had gone to see Loving You in a nearby Cinema.
Nobody, not even my cowboy screen hero Roy Rogers, came close in generating 90 minutes of breathless excitement on the big screen like Elvis did in Loving You.
The looks, the voice, the moves… I was hooked!
Elvis had been part of our family since 1957. From his pocket money my brother would save up to buy the first singles, 2nd hand.
By 1963, we had quite a collection of Elvis records, Elvis Monthlies, scrapbooks, the lot.
And even though, when his looks had changed from ultra kool in the 50s to office clerk dull in 1962, his music was still exciting. We had no problem playing Golden Records volume 2 back to back with Pot Luck or Something For Everybody.
After a 45 minutes ride we arrive at the Hallen Cinema.
“Today only – Elvis Presley in Love Me Tender!” reads the cardboard sign attached to the showcase sporting half a dozen black and white stills from the movie.
My dad orders us 3 tickets. “Excuse me, sir, but how old is the young kid standing next to you?” the lady seated in the ticket booth, asks.
“He’ll be 12 in a couple of days”, my dad replies.
“I’m sorry, sir. But youngsters under 14 are not allowed in for this film”.
How my dad convinced her to change her mind, I do not remember.
But only a few minutes later I find myself in the dark facing the large Cinema screen.
From seeing Love Me Tender, that Sunday morning, I can only remember the dying scene at the end. I cried a little.
It was at least 10 years later before I had a chance to see the movie again.
I wasn’t disappointed. Considering it was Elvis’ first Hollywood adventure, he came out good, having never had an acting lesson in his life. With Richard Egan, Debra Paget and several other strong actors surrounding him, plus a decent enough script, Love Me Tender is still worth watching. Not having to press the Remote control “fast forward” every 5 minutes, like with most of his 60s Hollywood disasters, is a relief.
Not that I’ve watched many in the last 10 years or so. And when I did, with the exception of G.I. Blues, Flaming Star and Viva Las Vegas, my heart cried a little. But not like that time in the Hallen Cinema, back in 1963.
But out of utter disbelieve. How could such a talented guy had thrown away a promising acting career in only a few years time?
I can’t think of any other “star,” who has headlined in 10 silly movies in a row. But Elvis did. Easily.
The title of Dylan's song "I Threw It All Away" sums up
Elvis' movie career. And dont blame the Colonel for all that caused Elvis' Hollywood downfall. Elvis was there all along when contracts for more movies had to be signed...And he signed them all. No matter how bad the scripts and songs presented to him .
But back in august of 1956, arriving in Hollywood for his debut movie "The Reno Brothers", Elvis had every reason in the world to be excited about this new chapter
in his carreer . A carreer that had roller coastered him to the number 1 spot in populair music in less than 9 months." Not bad for a kid from Tupelo Mississippi", as Keith Richards had once said. Not bad indeed.
“Dum- dee- dum- dee- dum- yeah! yeah! yeah!”

It's not an Article Doc, it's what Ger has wrote for the Foreword of his last Project as Jeroen said.drjohncarpenter wrote:Is the reason Ger is no longer posting here because he's living in the future?JeroenNL wrote:... Echoes Of The Past ... Ger Rijff / May 2009

I've spoken to Ger already about what he's wrote, needless to say, we got some good Soundtracks from them anyway.

I saw Elvis live in concert the year before he died. Even then, he was bigger than life, and had amazing charisma. Haven't seen anything like it since, ....until Adam.........Nocturnal 2010

And why is the piece dated May 2009?

Re: Rijff's final contribution to Elvis in print...
Well... I don't know what's in the Book because I've only seen the Foreword of it. I would presume it would be along the same lines as what is in the other Inside Books.drjohncarpenter wrote:Right. I'm presuming it's pre dated to 2009 because that may be when the Book comes out, either that or Ger got his dates mixed up.

Re: Rijff's final contribution to Elvis in print...
Just to clarify that the post JeroenNL made was the Foreword for the already released book, Love Me Tender, it was Ger's Goodbye to the Elvis World and there is nothing more planned from him, and 2009 was a typo.
Sorry for the Confusion

to be fair, Ger was often rude, arrogant and foul mouthed towards other board members regardless of age - he was by no means an innocent party.

If you look at the stick the Doc gets for some of his replies, he has never been as nasty as Ger could be, and yet lots of people stick up for him.
Yes, he made a great contribution in terms of his fine books, and was there at the time in terms of growing up with Elvis, but he had many faults too.
