Love me Tender: Stereo or Mono?

#500312

Post by Robert »

Love me tender, maybe the ultimate Elvis classic?
The well known original has a limited mono, yet intimate and familiar sound..
The album seen below however, features a rather amazing stereo/binaural version (same take!)
When I first heard it, in crystal clear sound, I wondered why the "original" mono version is still used on several "best of" releases..

Which version do you prefer?

I think the reason the mono version was used was because it was the original hit version.
That makes a big difference to alot of consumers.
That is why when 'a fool such as i" and 'the wonder of you" were released in place of the original versions it created a controvsy.

Point is, this stereo version is not a different take.
It's the same!
'A fool such as i" and "The wonder of you" were alternate versions..
(I didn't like those replacements either;)

I prefer the stereo version.

It is clearer than the original mono and the "heavy breathing" on the mono is virtually eliminated. The stereo version is also used on the budget UK Love Songs compilation, which has been out for many years.

I don't care for the song (unless it's the '68 Comeback 8:00pm version).

The stereo version is nice however I sincerely look forward to a Budd remaster of the original mono recording. For me, listening to Elvis in the 50s = mono.

Is the version on "Elvis" 66059 (2005) not in mono?

Agreed.

"Love Me Tender" has always been one of my least favorite of Elvis' bigger hits. I can take almost any version over the original. I just never did like it. If I had to choose one version to listen to though, it would from '68 as well.

I never liked the original, either. I like the Comeback Special version, and I also like Elvis's vocal from Madison Square Garden, June 10, 1972.

Normally, I would tend to prefer the original mono on 50's stuff.

But there were always a few things wrong with LMT !

And the stereo version [which had always been in the archives] at least puts some of them right !

That version is fantastic. It adds a new dimension to a pretty bland ballad.

Is there a pefectly "straight" live version of Love me tender from 1969 or the 70s though? In sound board quality I mean. Cos every RCA version has kisses or funny comments.

I recently spent ages listening to 1969, 1970, 71 and 72 shows to make a note of every "classic oldie" that featured a solid, straight performance with no interupting dialogue etc. Most were 1969 and 70, with a few from 72.

I compiled a great "fantasy" oldies show, which sounds breathtaking, but "love Me Tender" let's it down, because the straightest versions I could fins still had kisses and missing bits. A Shame. Cos the 1969-73 live versions feature a great arrangement!

Same thing is true of all the available 1969 renditions of Memories. All feature comments and kisses. You guessed - I also did a fantasy "contemporary" show which is even better!!!

Seriously? The "oldies" were rarely performed well. "Heartbreak Hotel" had a nice bluesy feel to it during August 1970, but generally speaking, the classics such as "Teddy Bear," "All Shook Up," "Hound Dog," "Jailhouse Rock," etc were toss-aways. Even the versions from the brilliant 1969 shows were based more on energy than focused attempts. The "Love Me Tender" arrangements from the 70's don't compare to the Burbank '68 arrangements on any level. Can't imagine how that mix you created is breathtaking.

well if we exclude the fantastic and really BREATHTAKING versions from the burbank ´68 shows

I think that versions of these classic R&R songs from the following years would make a pretty Rocing cd

Blue suede shoes 1969
I got a woman 1969 - feb 1970
Johnny b good 1969 (not a Elvis classic, but indeed one of the biggest classic rock songs)
All shook up 1969
Jailhouserock/dont be cruel 1969
Heartbreak hotel 1969
Thats allright opening feb 1970(could also add TB /DBC medley from this Show, but there is allready dont be cruel in a medley with Jailhouserock
Long tall sally opening feb 1970 (or polk salad annie FTD)
Hound dog polk (salad annie FTD with the ekstra verse)

Mysterytrain/"tigerman"(not a Elvis classic)1969 or aug 1970
I love all versions that I have heard of this medley from those two years,
but the one from the FB cd opening night ( 3 aug)is my favorite

one night aug 1970
Love me aug 1970

Lawdy miss clawdy april 1972 0r memphis 1974
Big hunk of love april 1972

I now its only Rock & Roll but I like it

I think the original version needs some more props. If you think about it, how many Top 40 records are this quiet and spare? This from the artist only a few months earlier had hit with what was probably the loudest record ever made to that point. How many ballads do we hear that are this free of melodrama? Elvis' epic '68 reading eclipses it but the original deserves respect.

The '70s on stage version allow us to see the divide between making a good show and making a good record. It doesn't give us what we want musically but during the show it probably went over like gangbusters because the kisses directly engaged the audiences. Interacting with a live audience is a distinct craft and it's often lost on a tape.

The On Tour version is nice, from a visual point of view that is.
That howling dog on the closing notes is a tad over the top though.

Bike, I totally agree with what you wrote.

I like "both" versions, but, the "stereo" mix, added, IMHO, a whole new dimension of clarity and warmth I hadn't welcomed in years before.

I went thru a phase where I couldn't stomach to listen to "Love Me Tender" passed the few first bars, but as I've grown older and wiser, I've come to appreciate the record more and more.

I also respect the fact that Elvis had so much nerve to record such a record so far removed from the revolution and controversy that he was causing in his breakthrough year.
