Last time use of saxophones?
Taking advantage of the Swingin-Little-Guitar-Man topic, do you guys which was the last Elvis song with sax solos? This was such a common thing in the 60's, and suddenly disappeared...

Re: Last time use of saxophones?
January 1969's "Long Black Limousine" and "Wearin' That Loved On Look" feature great saxophone overdubs by Ed Logan, Jackie Thomas and Andrew Love.

When did he cut this? Why??
This is a real find.

Re: Last time use of saxophones?
Who said it's only about studio work?
In any event I would dispute that an overdubbed sax would qualify as Elvis did not sing with the sax playing on the track he laid down. There obviously be no interaction between the sax and Elvis.
So Ethan is heading in the right direction

Re: Last time use of saxophones?
As the original question was what the last Elvis song was containing the sax, the doc's answer qualifies perfectly.KiwiAlan wrote:Who said it's only about studio work?

Btw, wasn't that a trompet in American Trilogy in '75 ... quite different than a sax.

Re: Last time use of saxophones?
Indeed. And if one bothers to revisit the referenced post, the implication of this question is quite clear.stefan kock wrote:As the original question was what the last Elvis song was containing the sax, the doc's answer qualifies perfectly.
And it seems my answer is -- yet again -- right on the money.

Re: Last time use of saxophones?
well, being pedantic, the post is asking about Sax solo's, not necessarily just songs with a sax in the background somewhere, but doesn't mention studio.
I think the last time there's an out and out sax instumental solo is probably High Heel Sneakers.
In Long Black Limousine, the main brass instrument heard is a trumpet, and it's also a trumpet on Trilogy in 75, so that doesn't count. In Wearing That Loved On Look, again, there's no prominent sax, but a blistering Piano solo!
If we're asking the last time a sax appeared on an Elvis record in any format, is it not If You Talk In Your Sleep, where a sax be heard througout, answering the trumpets?

Re: Last time use of saxophones?
I would rather say "Shake a hand" from the march 1975 sessions. Listen to the chorus (if it´s not a synthesizer overdub)DarrylMac wrote:well, being pedantic, the post is asking about Sax solo's, not necessarily just songs with a sax in the background somewhere, but doesn't mention studio.

Re: Last time use of saxophones?
It's indeed a bit confusing, the original post talks about sax solo's while the thread title uses the word use.DarrylMac wrote:well, being pedantic, the post is asking about Sax solo's, not necessarily just songs with a sax in the background somewhere, but doesn't mention studio.
I think both questions have been answered in this thread !

The question is about the presence of a sax on a Elvis song. As far as I'm concerned, I never knew he had a sax during his live performances. However, if I'm not correct, please say what's right. It doesn't matter if it's live or studio.

Re: Last time use of saxophones?
Well, Boots Randolph played sax on stage with Elvis, most memorably in some 1961 charity shows.Elvisenna wrote:The question is about the presence of a sax on a Elvis song.

Elvis didn't use a 'solo' sax in his later live performances, maybe a member of the orchestra played one occasionally................

Erhan,
You implied that with your answer. The topic is actually referring to 'studio' versions of songs where a saxophone is used...not live. And I don't believe that a sax was ever at any time used on "American Trilogy"....only horns or trumpets.

Everyone knows that Elvis Presley loved sax -- and violins.

Re: Last time use of saxophones?
He should've used way more sax in the 70's. That would've really rocked up a lot of his performances, and maybe even helped his chart career at the time.

Re: Last time use of saxophones?
No mention in the topic that it is limited to studio work but for what it's worth I think the last sax was on Shake a Hand or maybe even Pledging my Love - though I stand to be corrected that synthesier or another instrument was used

I suspect that it is a distorded/fuzzed guitar from James Burton that sounds like a sax on "Pledging my love".
Otherwise, do we have an answer for the question? I still believe that the answer is "Shake a hand".

Re: Last time use of saxophones?
What about including a sax on "Suspicious Minds"? That would be something!
