Elvis '68 TV Special 40th Anniverary Limited Edition Box

#490147

Post by MysteryTrain »

If anyone can read Japanese, "Elvis World" has listed all the tracks on the "Elvis '68 TV Special 40th Anniversary Limited Edition Box."

Go to: http://www.biwa.ne.jp/~presley/index1.htm Click on the "CD News" link and scroll down.

Somewhat appropriately, it appears to have 68 tracks!

It appears to be 6 sides, thus 3 discs! Wonder why no one else has been able to come up with more facts about this?

No it's 4 discs. Check the included link to Amazon Japan. The first two discs appear to be the two "sit down" shows and the two "stand up" shows. I think the impromptu rehearsals have been omitted. I assume discs 3 and 4 are studio versions, probably including outtakes. Of course, I can't read Japanese, so I'm obviously speculating.

The six discs appear to contain the following;

1. Sit Down Show One - 27 June 6pm
2. Sit Down Show Two - 27 June 8pm
3. Dressing Room Rehearsal - 24 June
4. Stand Up Show One - 29 June 6pm
5. Stand Up Show Two - 29 June 8pm
6. Production Numbers

103 tracks in total.
This seems to be the 'deluxe' edition which comes in a "Special black leather luxury package with a 36 page booklet filled with rare photographs".

I like a couple of the literal translations:

Do not unsympathetically - Don't Be Cruel
Miss Lodi KUROUDI - Lawdy Miss Clawdy
Tomorrow's wishes - If I Can Dream
:)

For whatever its worth there are 99 tracks combined on 'Memores" "Tiger Man" "Let Yourself Go' and 'Burbank 68'. Now this is not including the unreleased tracks that were on the box "Today,Tommarrow and Forever".

I guess this could be a hastily thrown together box in the sence that the Valentine Tin of a couple years ago had one of those 10 trackers that were released a few years before or it could include a disc that was already out like the upcoming Christmas Peace will be included on one of those new tins coming out later this year.

I would really think a release that capitalizes on such a huge anniversary would have some thought to it. Like liner notes from Peter G, David M or Colin Escott. I was thinking something along the lines of Platinum or Close Up. with art work and design that has some thought put into it, but after reading some of these threads I dont know.

Here is the marketing stategy for the outsiders.

Produce them fast.
Produce them cheap.
Sell a bunch before anyone knows that not much thought went into it.

This usually works when selling Elvis products.

I'm afraid ekenee is right! When you see the other boxes BMG/SONY has thrown together for this year, this one could easily be in the same vein! Sad but true?

I'm really hoping I'm wrong because this segment of ELvis' career is very important and should be given some real creative planning.

Hopefully they saved or found something rare that could be included with this set.

Perhaps the audio for the party version of "its hurts me" or something else equally as cool.

But could there be any material that has not been released by BMG on CD, but has been released on DVD?

I've have all the mainstream audio/video products that have been released down through the years by RCA/BMG/Sony-BMG/FTD/EPE dating back to the original soundtrack album on vynl in 1968. If this news about the forthcoming boxset is correct I, too, will skip this release.

Maybe in the Elvis world. The Grateful Dead's recent "Winterland '73" boxset is fantastic. This upcoming '68 Comeback Special box set will obviously contain mostly previously released material - how could it not? But, it would be nice if the producers could at least add a few unreleased tracks from one of Elvis' finest projects. Granted there probably isn't much left in terms of unissued material....

Yes definitely. That's what I meant but forgot to make that clearer. I remember there was definitely something to look forward to each August at least when it came to box sets. Then it seemed to taper off within the last couple years. Perhaps the birth of the FTD label has changed things.
