Songs written for or first recorded by Elvis
Most parts of Elvis`songs were covers, but some were actually written for or first recorded by Elvis. I`d like if we could possible make a list of songs that were first recorded by Elvis........I know some of them..I think, but how many and which ones can actually make it into such a list...
First comes to my mind:
Heartbreak hotel
If I can dream
In the ghetto
Don`t cry daddy
Help me
And

If you talk in your sleep
Separate ways
You'll be gone
That's someone you'll never forget
Jailhouse rock
Don't
Loving you
Teddy bear
Don't be cruel
A big hunk o' love
Stuck on you
Make me know it
Hot d@mn, there are so many....
Did Jerry Reed record "US Male" before he showed Elvis the song or was it new then?

Re: Songs written for or first recorded by Elvis
I know, but really, it`s something I`d really like to know about. I know all Elvis`songs, but again and again I get surpriced when I learn that his version was actually a cover, so that`s why I started this thread...Spellbinder wrote:You're A Heartbreaker ?
About "You`re a heartbreaker"....was Elvis the first to record it?

There is a difference between"-
Songs written especially for Elvis, like Jailhouse Rock
Songs written for anyone but first released by Elvis..like Hot Dog.
Songs written especially for Elvis but rejected and used by others...like Kewpie Doll.

Re: Songs written for or first recorded by Elvis
"Hot Dog" was actually recorded by former Coasters' member Young Jessie before Elvis got it.
"Santa Claus is Back in Town"
"Bitter They are Harder They Fall"
"I Forgot to Remember to Forget"
"Surrender"
"A Mess of Blues"
"Suspicion"
"It's Now or Never" Ok the melody was "O Sole Mio" but Elvis commissioned the rewrite.

I was sure that Young Jessie did record it but it was never released.

Not sure about "Help Me." Since it was written by Larry Gatlin he may have recorded his version before Elvis got around to it.

You can't include Suspicious Minds as it was written &
recorded by Mark James, albeit unsuccessfully, before
Elvis got to hear it.

Larry Gatlin wrote "Help Me" specifically for Elvis. Larry never recorded a version of the song.

Re: Songs written for or first recorded by Elvis
with this link you'll see a list with original songs recorded by other artists before Elvis did his version; in general you can say now that the remaining songs were recorded by Elvis at first.(especially songs written for movies).

Re: Songs written for or first recorded by Elvis
You could add And The Grass Won't Pay No Mind to these songs.
It was obviously not written with Elvis in mind, but Elvis recorded it even before Neil Diamond. Producer Chips Moman of American Sound studios had to cancel a recording session with Diamond in order to record with Elvis. Diamond agreed, but only if Elvis would record this song.
