Cash Box - November 11, 1972!
For the edification of Bodie and Tony Trout!
Although it shouldn't have been, fall 1972 was the last time Elvis Presley topped the AM pop radio world -->
"Burning Love" hit #1 on the CashBox pop chart on November 11, 1972.
BMG used this placing when assembling the selections for ELV1S: 30 #1 Hits in 2002:
There are some CLASSICS in that Top 20, aren't there?
Sadly, Chuck Berry's novelty hit is not one of those.

Thanks for that chart, Doc.
Very interesting data.
Ironic that on this Cashbox chart, Chuck's "Classic" took a hard fall that one week.

Yes -- but the darn thing had been on the charts 16 weeks at that point!

Do you know how much longer Chuck's record stayed on the charts during it's initial run ?drjohncarpenter wrote:Yes -- but the darn thing had been on the charts 16 weeks at that point!
If I recall correctly, ironically again, Elvis' record charted for a Total of of 16 weeks.

No arguing also that:
a) Chuck deserved a #1 hit
b) Chuck Berry = rock and roll

Re: Cash Box - November 11, 1972
I think the week when Elvis, Chuck Berry and Ricky Nelson shared space in the Top Ten created a kind of backlash against '50s artists. Things seemed too retro. From this point on, except for inexplicably Paul Anka, it became exceedingly difficult for any '50s associated artists to gain airplay even though some like Elvis, Ricky Nelson, the Everly Brothers and Dion were working in contemporary style. Elvis suffered a lot less than the rest because of his reputation, RCA and his loyal fans but it seems there was a sharp break in his airplay and I wonder if a backlash to this occurence was a part of the cause.
In 1965 this Top 20 could have been about 70 percent killer. But as Doc points out things were still pretty sharp in the Top 40 even at this point. Maybe half these songs are classics "I'll Be Around", "Elected", "Freddie's Dead", "If You Don't Know Me By Now", "Papa Was a Rolling Stone", "You Ought to Be With Me" and of course "Burning Love". While I wouldn't say "I Can See Clearly Now" is at that level it ain't chopped liver.

Re: Cash Box - November 11, 1972
Do you know if Elvis ever had all of the top 5 singles in the chart at the same time like the Beatles did? If not, was there a time when Elvis had a basic monopoly on the top 10 or top 20? Just curious. Thanks for posting, Doc!

Interesting to see that chart, with such a high place for Good Time's Charlie! I never heard of that song before Elvis, but i was just toddler then.
Would the amount of number ones differ if only the Cash Box Chart was used?

Anybody know where I can get a list of how many copies each gold record of EP sold? Sorry, don't mean to hijack this thread, I just didn't want to start a new thread. Thanks in advance!

Re: Cash Box - November 11, 1972
Even though the tenor of the discussion presumes the pop charts, I'd like to point out that Elvis did score #1 singles on the Billboard country chart with Moody Blue; Way Down and the Guitar Man remake (the latter two posthumously). Also, My Boy reached #1 on the adult contemporary chart.

Re: Cash Box - November 11, 1972
Yeah but 'Burning Love' is not recognized as an Official No.1 just like the 3 singles which have gone No.1 in the 'Sales' Singles chart in the US this past decade.
Doc,
Do you know why my question and your reply have been deleted in the other thread regarding this subject?
If Id known it was gonna be deleted i wouldnt have bothered putting it up.

No, Elvis had exactly the same amount of number ones on Billboard and Cash Box (18). But they were a bit different.epf wrote:Interesting to see that chart, with such a high place for Good Time's Charlie! I never heard of that song before Elvis, but i was just toddler then.

Good eye, Björn! No doubt this is where Elvis became attached to the song.dreambear wrote:The song on the 11:th place seems familiar...
You're welcome! IIRC, Elvis did not match that astounding achievement by the Beatles in April 1964. But there is no doubt that in sales and chart success, Elvis' run in 1956-57 was quite like the events of the amazing "British Invasion" eight years later.RonBaker2003 wrote:Do you know if Elvis ever had all of the top 5 singles in the chart at the same time like the Beatles did? Re: Cash Box - November 11, 1972
Yes Doc,
I was aware that 'Burning Love' went to No.1 on the Cash Box Chart but it doesnt mean anything cause its not recognized as an Official No.1.
Really dont see the point in having more than ONE singles chart.
As for my post getting deleted on the other thread, i just felt it was unnecessary.
Oh well.Never mind.

BMG recognized it! And so do I.Bodie wrote:I was aware that 'Burning Love' went to No.1 on the Cash Box Chart but it doesnt mean anything cause its not recognized as an Official No.1.
"Burning Love" was a rock classic the instant the first RCA promo 45 hit George Klein's turntable on WHBQ-AM in Memphis.

Yes, 'Burning Love' is a rock classic but just because BMG and yourself recognize it as a No.1, officially it's not.drjohncarpenter wrote:BMG recognized it!
