Your advise for live cds

Fri Sep 22, 2017 11:49 pm

What do you recomment me for buying a new live cd.
Ive got :

everything from 1969 and 1970 (except writing for the king and polk salad annie)
1971 as recorded at boston garden
1972 everything except summer festival, destination usa
1973 aloha from hawaii (legacy)
1974 sold out, live on stage (legacy)
1975 big boss man, today (legacy)
1976 nothing...
1977 in concert

As you can see, I prefer the early years until 1970 and the multitracks. When I want to buy a few more cds, what do you recommend me?

Stick with anything prior to 1973. It looks like you still have four to get, go for them first.

The 1969-1972 period is going to be the strongest by far, so it makes sense to exhaust all options from that particular era. There isn't much from 1973, and both "I'll Remember You" and "Closing Night" are inferior in comparison to Aloha. 1974 is uneven, and you have it well covered. That said, "Nevada Nights" offers the famous opening night concert from Elvis' summer 1974 engagement, so that is certainly worth consideration. 1975 is another uneven, if not overrated concert year, that you have pretty well covered. The recently deleted "Dixieland Rocks" release may be the best live release from 1975, so it is worth acquiring if you can locate a copy. 1976 is a horrid year of live work for Elvis. The best concert is found on FTD's "Spirit of Jackson" release, but it is well below the quality and standard of previous years. 1977 is another rough touring year. "Elvis In Concert" is probably enough, but if you want a bit more, seek out "Spring Tours."

Spring Tours is far from his greatest live performances, but considering the circumstances...sure.

1976? A Hot Winter Night In Dallas...that's a good one.

For 1976, it is good. But in comparison to rest of his live work, it is a significant step down. 1976 was a rough year for Elvis' live performances.

If you can track it down I'd recommend:

While it isn't multi-track, the sound is incredible... and it's a pretty decent show for the Winter '73 engagement.

I would argue that Chicago Stadium is the best available show from 1976. Elvis is in good form, but not manic as he was in December, and the soundboard quality of the second disc is really very very good.

me personally I love the 1973 FTD ''Takin Tahoe Tonight'' its in really great sound & a pretty fun show imo ... in addition to what u have already have I would recommend ''The Hometown Shows'' from 76 yea pickup ''Spirit of Jackson'' & ''Showtime'' or the Chicago shows release.

I would recommend the FTD 2 CD release 'Nevada nights' (August 19, 1974 - Opening Show / August 21, 1974 - Midnight Show). The opening night show has a particularly interesting set list:

01 Big Boss Man (Rare opening song)
02 Proud Mary
03 Down In The Alley (only known live version)
04 Good Times Charlie's Got The Blues (only known live version)
05 Never Been To Spain
06 It's Midnight
07 If You Talk In Your Sleep
08 I'm Leavin'
09 Let Me Be There
10 Softly As I Leave You
11 If You Love Me (Let Me Know)
12 Love Me Tender
13 Polk Salad Annie
14 Introductions (Including introduction of Telly Savalas)
15 Promised Land
16 My Baby Left Me
17 Bridge Over Troubled Water
18 Fever
19 Hound Dog
20 Can't Help Falling In Love (incomplete)

I wouldn't touch any of those other suggestions until you've picked up those four discs that encompass 1969, 1970 and 1972.

If you could find this for a decent price it is worth it, they are audience recordings but they sound really good and also 2 great shows with Elvis being in great shape.

Im listening to Takin Tahoe Tonight at Youtube at the moment. I like the medley whole lotta / shake, rattle and roll! And the sound is indeed very good!

Cincinnati 76, good sound and enjoyable show, as is the Charlotte show from the same tour. Atlanta June 4, 1976, although an audience recording, is one of the few good shows during the May/June tour.

I agree you should get everything from 1969 to 1972. Hometown Shows is pretty good, and Nevada Nights is recommended for the opening show alone. Other than that, you really should have one 1976 release in your collection, just to have it covered. If you like audience recordings, go for New Year's Eve. If not, then one of these: Showtime!, Spirit of Jackson, West Coast Tour '76 (a bit piano heavy but otherwise decent), or A Minnesota Moment.

Everything from 69-72 is not always gold guaranteed. Destination USA sounds flatter than flat and it’s not an amazing show. The first show on hometown shows is a great show in AMAZING sound. And for 76 I’ll still pick showtime.

I mean the FTDs from 1969-1972 you do not have yet:

writing for the king
polk salad annie
impossible dream
summer festival
destination usa

The performance standard from 1969 to 1972 is consistently higher than anything to follow. That is a fact.

And you might want to check out the Atlanta 75 FTD. Good singing and different set list from the rest of the 75 tours.

Hometown shows gets my vote, both shows are in very good sound and good concerts... Nevada nights does offer the cool opening show with different song selections than he usually does but the sound is pretty flat... BUT if you want a concert that is really a different affair then go for Nevada Nights
