FTD question

#426198

Post by Rob V »

Hi all,

Sorry if this has been brought up before, but should FTD given us lyrics from the start on the "Classic Deluxe Albums" eg. EP (1956) E Is Back, Something, Pot L, Today, Raised and the Movie Soundtracks. Or is this not essential considering lyrics can be found on a number of Elvis sites, also on early RCA releases (German pressings)

What do others think.

Thanks,

Rob.

I think lyrics are necessary only if they came with the original lp. If not, you can find them all on the internet.

“Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way, if he gets angry, he's a mile away and barefoot.”

Good question! I personally think lyric sheets would be a nice addition to these releases. On the other hand, I already have lyrics sheets to many original Elvis albums -- the Japanese paper sleeve CDs all include lyrics sheets. They make for cool reading. Being a Swedish fellow, I don't always pay attention to English lyrics the way I do with Swedish lyrics. It's not that I don't understand them. They just pass me by somehow. So these lyric sheets have actually opened my eyes and ears a bit and made me more aware of what some of those songs are about. Makes me appreciate them even more.

Yes, I suppose they are a help for those whose 1st language is not English.

But, in my experience, they sometimes don't have the exact words that Elvis sings !

Too true! Actually, there is a line in "Ito Eats" which I've always thought goes "Ito eats like teeth are out of style". But in the lyric sheet to the Japanese "Blue Hawaii" CD it goes "Ito eats like titanothere style". I mean what the... f... is THAT supposed to mean?!

Apart from that I haven't noticed anything really weird and I have about 15 of those albums. But I remember some truly hilarious lyrics that The Man And His Music printed some years ago...

I used to lie
I used to cheat
I used to lie, cheat and steal from people's feet

I've seen it myself.

Are you suggesting they aren't the words, then ?

Good one, Rob!

How about this asian version of "Suspicous Minds" which was printed in issue 10 of The Man And His Music:

SUSPICOUS MIND

Reff:
We call her friend, I can walk down
Because I love you too much, baby
What you don't believe a word I say

We can't go on together with suspicious mind
And we can't feel out me all suspicious mind
Whoever who friend I know
As far as say hello
We are still see some special in your eyes
You become again, as you are keen
You can see the tear and crying
We can't go on together with suspicuous mind
And we can't feel out me all suspicious mind
All that I love is fine are trouble tiff somewhere
As there're no a good thing die
You know that I love you
(Repeat reff...)

And here, from the book "Jailhouse Rock" by Cotten/DeWitt, is the lyrics to "Jailhouse Rock" taken from the back cover of a Brazilian Elvis LP:

JAILHOUSE ROCK

One, two part in the cany dial
Prison in the stand they forgot the wale
When this job is none
The job begin to swing
You should have to rock
Dead jail bird sing let's rock
Everybody let's rock
Everybody in the all say oh! Bob  :D
You stand till Jail our rock

Spart a marble in the saxphone
Little Joe in blow in old sa trambone
Climb across the matter
You gonna track oll band
You hold a red sax
You wanna purple game

,,,and that's only half of it! (I can't be bothered to type the second half.)

So yeah, it appears that Colin is right -- you can't always trust lyrics sheets!

Why not release them with a piece of Elvis' clothing or leaves from one of the trees at Graceland?

Talking about lyrics, I was trying to figure out what Elvis sings on the last verse of Lawdy Miss Clawdy in the 68 Comeback. It's not the same as the official lyrics. Any ideas??

I said bye, bye bye baby, girl I won't be coming no more,
Goodbye Tarnelle darling, down the road I go.

I believe Tarnelle is a girl's name popular in the Southern states of America. People often think Elvis sings Toenail, but it ain't so.
i thought it was goodbye till now darlin', down the road i go.
but yours makes sense
:D
