Thanks for your votes! Sorry, it's only one list per person. But I understand the frustration :D

Any more before the big count down?

likethebike wrote: Midnight- I definitely think a track like "Hurt" is fair game for an Elvis Top Ten. When the dust eventually settles, I don't think anyone care about the original public reception of a record unless you're total influence as your defining criteria. Even there though a song like "American Trilogy" which was a miserable flop upon its release is a well known latter period Elvis song due to its primary placement in his live show and has had a bit of influence on the Vegas crowd. I remember seeing Wayne Newton doing (great artists influence hacks too) an almost copy of it including Elvis' body movements at some sort of convention on TV a few years back. That being said if you want to have something in stores, it's better to have hits although Elvis had so many that any compilation will p*** somebody off. "Hurt" by the way was a respectable hit in its day going Top 30 and Top Ten on AC and CW. This is about equal to "Guitar Man" in 1981 which I heard on the radio a lot.
Bike, Hurt is of course worthy of being included in a personal top ten list, in fact anything would be acceptable. One could have all movie soundtrack tunes from Girls Girls Girls! and Double Trouble if it was what they were into. But, if one was crafting a compilation of 10 tracks as some sort of career overview or introduction to Elvis' body of work, I would argue that there would be 10 more significant tracks to include before adding Hurt to the equation.

Ok I'll take a crack at this.
#1). Good Rockin' Tonight.
I know That's All Right is more historically important as Elvis' first commercially released recording, and the first to feature the synthesis that became known as rockabilly, but GRT is to my ears his first real rock & roll recording. It's a call to arms!
#2.) Heartbreak Hotel.
This record kicked off Presleymania on a nationwide basis. Not quite blues, not rockabilly, not pop or country it remains a unique performance.
3.) Don't Be Cruel.
Elvis invents a new genre: rhythm & pop.
4.) Hound Dog.
Elvis kicks his rockin' sound into overdrive. The aural equivalent of his sneer.
5.) Love Me.
With Any Way You Want Me Elvis' early ballad sound begin to gel. On LM his sense of style is fully realized.
6.) Jailhouse Rock.
Takes the lesson of Hound Dog and kicks it up another notch. This is the hard rock of the 50's.
7.) Reconsider Baby.
Arguably the greatest blues performance from a white man ever!
8.) How Great Thou Art.
I'd be hard pressed to imagine even a staunch atheist not being moved by this stirring performance.
9.) If I Can Dream.
Elvis sings his heart, soul and guts out on this record. The raw emotion he invests in this overcomes the somewhat trite lyrics. He believes every word - and makes you believe them too!
10.) Suspicious Minds.
Arguably his greatest recording. A desperate plea that somehow manages to sound majestic.

Is this your desert island top ten or what you think are Elvis' best recordings?

They're what I think are Elvis' best recordings/performances. It was tough to narrow it down to 10, and my list could change somewhat on a daily basis.

As for the desert island bit, I don't see how taking Elvis cd's does much good as there's no electricity! I'd be more inclined to take books such as 100 Ways To Cook Coconuts and How To Build a Raft Out of Palm Trees.

Enjoyed reading the lists. I have been listening to Elvis since 1962. These are all master studio versions.
1. Suspicious Minds (saw Elvis sing live in 69 before I heard the record. As they would say in the 60's, 'mind blowing.')
2. Heartbreak Hotel
3. All Shook Up
4. Jailhouse Rock
5. Little Sister
6. Burning Love
7. One Night
8. His Latest Flame
9. Guitar Man
10. Return To Sender

If I was allowed 5 more they would be:
11. Mystery Train
12. Fame and Fortune
13. Lawdy Miss Clawdy
14. Good Rockin' Tonight
15. Reconsider Baby

10- i just can´t help believin´
A majestic performance with a great call & response effect between Elvis and the Sweets.
9- suspicious minds
One of the best Soul recordings ever.
8- reconsider baby
Rasping Blues with an incredible sax-work from Boots Randolph.
7- little sister
One of Elvis´ nastiest Blues Rock performance with great vocals and a pretty catchy guitar part.
6- good rockin´ tonight
Impressive second single sung with much more confidence than for the first.
5- trying to get to you
Delicious bluesy ballad with outstanding vocals. Should have been a single.
4- merry christmas baby
My favorite Blues performance from the King recorded during a somehow uninspired session. 7 minutes of pure pleasure.
3- mystery train
Elvis´ best recording at Sun Records. Scotty Moore´ guitar part is magic.
2- if i can dream
Outstanding performance, beautiful message.
1- only the strong survive
The thrillest, the beautifulest, the morest. It surpasses anything recorded anytime.

Just too damn hard a question, its like naming your favourite kid but, Any Day Now has got to be top ten for me and Stand By Me is musical perfection. In fact its hard to see past any of the gospel recordings.

I got you melancholy baby, built like a melon face like a collie.

I'll apologise in advance for being (for want of a better word) an "Impersonator" but going on the audience reaction from my shows, and the shows of others, these are the top ten in terms of crowd pleasers, so I'll go with these:

Wonder Of You
American Trilogy
Suspicious Minds
I Just Can't Help Believing
Return To Sender
Let It Be Me
How Great thou Art (with reprise)
In The Ghetto
You Gave Me A Mountain
Bridge Over Troubled Water
Sweet Caroline
--------------------

However, me and my Dad have other, more personal favourites:

Such A Night
My Little Friend
True Love Travels On A Gravel Road
It's Midnight
Loving Arms
If That isn't Love
Just Pretend
Tomorrow Never Comes
Release Me
There's A Honky Tonk Angel
