Not me. I was a kid then and had no money. Even if this stuff was out I'd have still had to wait for the channel nine 4:30 movie.Gregory Nolan Jr. wrote:
Givin the Elvis releases on DVD and CD, import, and official in 2007 alone,I'd kill for an Elvis release year like this back in the quiet old days of the late '70s and '80s. I think I once "watched" the "The Trouble with Girls" as a scrambled "Showtime" cable signal...! and used to have to wait for a very cut-up "4:30 Movie" Elvis week ...

bripet56, Why don´t you stick to the "sunshine section" (where all the ass kissin´ is going on) of the forum then if it bothers you to read critical and constructive views? So what if Elvis has been dead for 30 years...does the new releases have to be "dead" as well??

Brian does have a point. I'm sick of all this moaning and bitching and fighting, too. And being nice has nothing to do with ass kissing, OK? I realize it must be difficult for you to understand that, though, since about 96% of your posts are rude and grumpy as all HELL!

Thanks for the news, Smudge. My copy of Viva Las Vegas hasn't arrived yet, but it's great to know they worked hard on it.
Coincidentally, elvissessions.com, thanks for several of your updates too, including the one you posted in this thread. I appreciate the effort to post scoops from Memphis.
The complainers, "the hate mongers," are continually being grouped together as agenda-driven pessimists and their criticisms are dismissed because of this. That's unfair to the posters and their feelings, regardless of whether they have a history of complaining. If these people are unhappy - even if continually so - they have a right to be and should be listened to, even if you don't agree with what they say or don't weigh the various factors in the same way they do. Perhaps some people won't ever be satisified but in the case of That's the Way It Is, I already outlined a list of legitimate complaints about the DVD on page six of this thread, so I won't repeat myself here. You can't just dismiss those complaints just because people complained in the past (about other products). A bad product is a bad product, even at fourteen dollars. If there's a lot of negativity, surely that's not all because of grumpy members with a vendetta. That having been said, the complainers shouldn't let their complaints be based on misgivings from the past, either; if, say, BMG previously screwed up a release, that shouldn't demerit current BMG products just because it's from the same company.
The optimists, I've started to notice, will now praise anything and everything just to combat the negativity from some members. This is unfair too, because it inaccurately reflects the merits (or lack thereof) of each product. Not everything is "great," we are not always "lucky" to to get to buy things, and sometimes an artist of Elvis' stature simply deserves more.
Both groups need to distinguish more between important and relatively unimportant factors to form their opinions. JerryNodak, for example, has written on several occasions that he thinks the new That's the Way It Is DVD is great because he "would finally have the original on DVD," since he didn't have a DVD player 'til 2005. That's not a review of the product, that's just personal situation. As it happens, I got the film on store-bought DVD back in 1998, so how is this argument valid? There are complaints and there are quibbles, just as there are ways to look on the bright side of life or wear rose-colored glasses.

Perspective is in order from both camps, the complainers and optimists alike.Gregory Nolan Jr. wrote:As Brian points out, some perspective is in order.

I just love that thread. About two people -- myself included -- wrote that "Easy Come, Easy Go" was a fine release: interesting facts in the booklet, improved sound quality, nice cover art, not a single mistake in sight... As a collector, I want all original albums and soundtracks -- the good AND the bad -- in nice quality and nice presentation. Ernst and his team achieved exactly that with "Easy Come, Easy Go". That is why I praised this release. Sure, the songs are not exactly brilliant. But that is hardly FTD's fault. They did a terrific job. Elvis did not.Peter Franks wrote:Not everything is "great,"...
That sounds fair enough to me. After all, this MB is called For Elvis CD Collectors Only. I thought is was allright to collect and enjoy the not-so-good records, too. But apparantly it wasn't since some fellow got so upset that he started a whole new thread about it. "Jesus! This guy just ain't grumpy enough! I have to do something about it!"

To Kris, it's all about tone and not, as you put it, about "cronies" and the "crap" that you so charitably remark upon.
The anonymity of the internet has bred an entire culture of snide commentary that otherwise could be constructive criticism. There have been a score of articles of late about the overall rudeness and lack of manners that is epidemic on the net, and yes, here.
I've gotten swept up in that before as well. That is all I'm trying to culitivate: Elvis fans that appreciate the big picture of what is now available (if not our finances) and to say it with some respect for fellow fans - and yes, for some of the "fans' who also produce and bring us such releases.
Could this or that release be better? Sure. But it's how we couch our criticism that counts most and the better one puts it out there, the more likely it's going to be listened to.
This is why writers here like Likethebike, Rockin' Rebel, Pete Dube, Peter Franks ("my cronies" ) etc are so effective in their commentaries.

I don't agree as that's a different matter. We have a total windfall of releases that pales in comparison to what was dribbled out on the odd compilation (1978's "He Walks Beside Me" or the original "Legendary Performer" series.) It's almost like we are getting a warehouse forklift-worth of new releases per year, more than I actually can afford even as an adult. But that's a nice problem to have for fans of a performer who hasn't been recorded in 30 years and two months...ekenee wrote:Gregory nolan jr. wrote: " Givin the Elvis releases on DVD and CD, import, and official in 2007 alone,I'd kill for an Elvis release year like this back in the quiet old days of the late '70s and '80s."

the same can be said for echoey, barely audible audience tapes, but we are all past the 80's. We don't play scratchy records, or tapes that get eaten in the player either.
Well said. I'd get bored if it was always 100% praise but I still maintain that folks don't realize we've never had it so good in terms of Elvis options on disc, audio or visual.Matthew wrote:Unfortunately 95% of the critical views are actually deconstructive.
