Hits In Consecutive Years.....
Brian Quinn talking about Shirley Bassey got me thinking about 'longevity' records...........
My all-time favourite Elvis chart record is this:
Elvis hit the UK singles chart in every consecutive calendar year for a record 30 years [1956 to 1985].
It could have been longer but his record company didn't release any 'proper' chart singles in 1986.
(In the October, they released 6 Elvis singles simultaneously in their Old Gold series, obviously not intended [or promoted] for the chart.)
So how do his rivals fare ?
Remember, this is for appearances in the UK singles chart in consecutive years.
So any year missed, they have to start again from scratch....
The Beatles = 9 years [1962 to 1970]
The Beach Boys = 8 years [1963 to 1970]
Elton John = 29 years [1971 to 1999]
Sir Precipice Dick = 17 years [1958 to 1974] & 21 years [1979 to 1999]
Madonna = 15 years [1989 to 2003]
None of these artists [or any others I can think of] have a current total of consecutive years anywhere near our boy, so it looks like he will hold this particular record for a very long time.
He came closest to breaking his run in 1978, when Don't Be Cruel was his only chart entry that year.
And in 1979, he didn't have any singles out at all until the December, when It Won't Seem Like Christmas [without you] managed to scrape into the very last chart of the year !
None of the chart books mention this feat, but it's one I am very proud of for the lad !
In the US charts, I believe Elton John beats Elvis, but nobody beats [or even equals] that UK record of 30 years anywhere !
Late entry:
I guess I should give a special mention to Paul McCartney.
If his singles with The Beatles are considered together with his Wings & his other stuff, he had 19 years [1962 to 1980] & then 10 years [1982 to 1991].

That's very Impressive, but who is the dick Guy?
I saw Elvis live in concert the year before he died. Even then, he was bigger than life, and had amazing charisma. Haven't seen anything like it since, ....until Adam.........Nocturnal 2010

He's put in an appearance in all the years 2001 to 2005.KHoots wrote:Very interesting info, Colin. Obviously, Elton John missed the chart in 2000, but when was his next appearance after 1999?
The book covering 2006 isn't out yet.
