Elvis Impersonating Others...

#355072

Post by ColinB »

The thread on Elvis 'doing' Johnny Cash got me thinking.....

How many singers did Elvis ever 'do' ?

Johnny Cash
Jackie Wilson [a member of Billy Ward's Dominoes]
Hank Snow [I'm With the Crowd, But Oh, So Alone]
Roy Orbison [brief snatch of Running Scared]
Fats Domino [Blueberry Hill]
Tiny Tim [snatch of Tiptoe Thru The Tulips]

(He did covers of other artists [like Little Richard & Chuck Berry] but without actually 'doing' their voices.)

Any more ?

I recall reading that he wanted to "do" Petula Clark & Karen Carpenter at the same time, but that's never been substantiated.

On the hoary studio master of "Girl Of Mine" he sounds a lot like his pal Tom Jones, but not in a good way.

However, some of the balls-to-the-wall blues power in his June 1968 TV Special voice may also be traced to catching the Welshman's act in Las Vegas two months prior, and in a good way.

His "Little Cabin Home On The Hill" from MDQ is a Bill Monroe impression

Also, I wouldn't call these "impressions", but heavy influence of other artists can be heard on-

Good Luck Charm- Dean Martin
I Want To Be Free- Clyde McPhatter

I'd say he sounds more like Humperdinck.
A truly awful thought to contemplate, but I believe you may well be correct.

There's even a Vegas show where Bobbie Gentry is in the audience and Elvis does a line of Tallahatchee Bridge (sp?) which sounds astonishingly like Bobbie, especially considering she is a woman.

The song is 'Ode To Billie Joe'.

I hear a touch of him impersonating Bob Dylan in the snippet of 'I shall be released'. He does'nt sound like himself, more like he is trying to sound like Bob, seeing as he really did'nt like Dylan's voice

'Sounds like Bob Dylan slept in my mouth all night' 8)

I always thought E sounded a lot like Dino on Teddy Bear.

And the idea that he is imitating Clyde McPhatter on White Christmas is beyond doubt.

On Without Love or You'll Never Walk Alone, i think he sounds like GOD. :)

Erm....?

Bobbie Gentry ("Ode To Billie Joe") ("I was out chopping wood and my brother was bailing hay..." -- during the recording of "Hi Heel Sneakers")

Bing Crosby (heavy emphasis on lower register in several "Blue Hawaii" songs sounds like he was emulating him or other crooners of old)

Dean Martin (allegedly sang the first lines of "That's Amore" during a Vegas concert?)

The Beatles ("Hey Jude") (Badly)
