SUN STUDIO TO RECEIVE HISTORIC LANDMARK DESIGNATION
Interior Secretary Gale Norton will designate the Sun Studio in Memphis as a national historic landmark.
The ceremony in Washington will recognize the studio where recording pioneer Sam Phillips recorded artists including Elvis Presley, B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis.
Sun will become the first recording studio designated as a historic landmark.
The studio exists much as Phillips created it. It's still a working studio where artists record at night. Visitors interested in music history fill it during the day.
The designation will make Sun eligible for some federal grants and tax incentives.
