Grosses

Wed Jul 23, 2003 3:29 am

I am curious where you got the numbers for VLV and BH - all the data I have seen on the net say they are 5.5 million and 4.5 million respectively. I have never seen them as high as 9 and 10 million.

Adjusted for inflation grosses

1/1/56 Love Me Tender Clint Reno $9,000,000 (60,650, 735.29)

Total Grosses $63,233,420 (based on 1968 dollars - 333, 065,686.38)
Average Gross $3,952,089 (20,816,605.39)

The other thing to remember that print runs were alot smaller (no multiplexes) Love Me Tenders print run was 500 - easy to assume that until the mid sixties Elvis' films would have had print runs on average of about 350 per film. I contrast films today in wide release average around 2800 prints (screens) so you have to add that into the equasion as well.

As an example - Jailhouse Rock had a 1957 gross of 4,000,000.00 on 500 prints. That would equal $8000 per screen, convert that to 2003 dollars and you get 52,185.05 per screen. Now multiply that by a run of 2800 screens as would be the norm today and you get a total gross adjusted for inflation and screens of $146,118,224.00. I'll work out that list and pot it later.

Great thread :D

It's annoying when people say "Well, Elvis sold only 3 million copies of Blue Hawaii, that's nothing compared to todays artists".... They forget to think about how much a records costed that time, compared to an average income. Also compare the price of a recordplayer in '56-'60 with the price of a CD player today, and you'll understand that the 50's-60's sales were a major achievement...

Graceland Gardener -

In the period covered [Love Me Tender to Speedway] there were another eleven Elvis films on top of those listed.

Some of these were only medium hits [Flaming Star, Wild In The Country] but some were block-busters, [Loving You, King Creole].

Just think how a complete list would look.

The person/persons at data@the-numbers.com who made that list left off the other films. I just copy/paste as-is to this thread.

Ok, let's add another twist to this thread. What would Elvis' average salary be adjusted to today's standards?

Elvis must have spent money like there was no tomorrow! Makes you understand why he kept making the movies.

Very interesting thread. Thank you.

Let's see. Did he not get %5 per sale in his 11-21-55 RCA contract. A record was 89 cents average then. Today that would be %5 of a $15.99 CD.

If the 1956 sales figure (4 million) were multiplied by $15.99 then divided by %5 .... that would be a cost-adjusted annual earning example.

Any math wizards here?

earnings

If I understood your question

a record cost $0.89 in 1956, converted that is $6.00 in 2003 dollars - you can't really use this figure unless you know the actual number of units he received the 5% royalty on.

Better off with the $4 million in gross earnings in 1956 converted to 2003 is $26,955,882.35
