World tour

Apart from Elvis' comments about touring Europe and the rest of the world is there any concrete evidence that a tour abroad was being planned? I look at how popular Elvis still is and then realise that he never toured outside the US (apart from Canada in 57).

Elvis had a meeting with some people about this subject in '77,
and commented:

"Back in the 20s or 30s, the killed you,
and dumped your body into the river.

Nowadays, the are smart businessmen, they're nice to you etc.
But you can't trust them.."

It's some kind of quote from the Larry Gellar book, and to me explains Elvis was rather uncomfortable with this subject...

It's the greatest waste in musical history our man didn't tour abroad

Cheers, RJ

There have been accounts that Parker contacted Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant about overseeing an Elvis Presley tour of Europe in 1978.

I can't say the greatest waste, but one of the greatest wastes

One of the contenders of 'Greatest waste in music history' to me, would have to be Jim Morrison's death at just 27. He died just when he was starting to get a really identifiable, fantastic sound of his last album with The Doors, L.A Woman. He also recorded great poetry. If he'd have lived better than he did, and been given at least 30 years more, he could've contributed even more classic work to music

Compared to Jim, Elvis did'nt have all that much to offer. Though we can all think of what could've happened.

There was an another problem. Were Elvis willing to stay clean for a long world tour, and would he like to travel without his guns? I´m not really shure about this (I know the possibility that he stayed clean for a while before the Aloha project)

Staying clean really wasn't necessary; since all his drugs were prescription medication. It is not illegal to bring medicine on your travels. I guess he would have brought Dr Nick with him too! The amount he took could have caused problems, maybe, although I'm not so sure Elvis and/or his personal belongings would have been searched by customs anyway. And what rock group in the 70´s didn't use drugs? McCartney was busted in Japan, but that was for dope.
