Does EP's Milky White Way performance equal Surrender?

#310067

Post by Joe Car »

I know some people will think I've lost it, after getting into Milky White Way the last few days, I can't get over how brilliant EP sang this beautiful gospel song. When I hear it, his performance reminds of how he performed Surrender, just so incredible, like he could whatever he wanted to with his voice, or hit any note. The song itself is so catchy and I just find myself grooving to it. What a talent this man was!

Elvis was a (Gospel) singer par excellence. On "Milky White Way", (1960), he' got the strength of a bassman and the sweetness of a tenor. The heritage we have in Elvis' gospel music is a gift to the world".- Paul Poulton, in "Cross Rhythms Magazine"

Well I personally prefer MWW as a song more the Surrender.

His voice is all over the ranges on both songs, but I just like MWW more.

Thinking about it now, I think his voice is more impressive on Surrender, but I just don't like the song as much.

The entire session, the entire album, Crying In The Chapel and Surrender are all Elvis at his vocal best! I've always loved the His Hand In Mine album.
Mostly becaus the way Elvis deliver! Can't wait to receive the FTD!

Vocally, was he any better then this period, I doubt it.

I have to agree with both well stated comments...

It's a flawless record.

Yes, vocally, EP was in his element from 1960 till about 1962. That man could sing anything.

But, in another sense, no one period has it all. I say he could sing anything, and that's more or less correct, but could he have sounded as weary and worldly wise on "Funny How Time Slips Away" in 1960 as how he sounded on it in 1970? Technical precision, velvety vocals and flighty enthusiasm are all hallmarks of 1960, and they count for a lot, but they don't account for everything. Something to think about and maybe discuss.

Excellent poster Elton!
Can you imagine paying only $3 to see Elvis in 1957 (ya and I know what that equates to today so don't bring that up!!! )... in his freakin' prime!!!
I can't believe a group like the Eagles can get away with charging $150+ for box office ticket prices or even Barbra Streisand for $1100.00 up here when she performed recently in Canada...
This guy was the biggest entertainer the world has ever known!!! Even at the time of his death he was only getting barely $20.00 a ticket... UNBELIEVABLE!!!

I love this performance. Surrender is a more challenging vocal, but Milky White Way couldn't have been sung better.

MWW is tops all the way. Surrender is good but was done for the bank and does not equal It's Now Or Never . Imo.

Elvis was great during several eras of his career, but I believe he was never in greater pure vocal form than he was from 1960-63 or so. Absolutely beautiful, and he sang with such ease. There are several examples of this, with "Milky White Way" being at/near the top of the heap.

I'm with you !

Whereas It's Now Or Never milked every last drop out of the O Solo Mio tune, Surrender never did the same for Torna A Sorriento.

There is a good pop song waiting to be written using that tune, but Surrender wasn't it !

That opening line "When we kiss my hearts afire" doesn't do justice to the subtelty of the original melody at all.

I thought it was When we Kiss my heart's On Fire ???

I'm really being picky here, the same thing i know...

I cannot compare Surrender to MWW, same era, 2 different songs.

One can only imagine how a proper recording of the Hawaiian benefit show in '61 would have sounded. Elvis still had that raw, unpolished rock'n roll voice from the 50's intact. Still he had come a long way vocally since he started out. I must admit that the early 60's voice up until the january '64 recordings are my favourite Elvis voices. Still, I will not take away anything from other periods. There were differences, that's all!
I would not have been an Elvis fan if it wasn't for his 50's voice and music!
That was the first Elvis voice I ever heard and the rest is history!

Good point Cryogenic!

He could perhaps have sung just about anything around 1960-62/63 but that doesen´t mean any song would´ve fittet. The voice is not all, the life experience counts to a certain degree too IMO, "Funny How Time Slips Away" being an excellent example. In that respect he may have been a better singer in 1977 when it comes to certain songs...some of you might not accept this for a fact or agree with it but...

And btw, both Milky White Way, Surrender and IMO I Believe In The Man In The Sky are great examples of what a terrific instrument Elvis´ voice was.

Elvis' voice in 1960-62 was flawless and brilliant. he sings like a bird. I prefer Milky White Way to Surrender.

My biggest dissapointment in Elvis career is that the stupid Colonel Farker should have had the brain to get RCA to record the 2 historical '61 Concerts in Memphis and Hawaii.
He should have also got Paramount or MGM to filmed both concerts. What a bloody waste, what a pity. Scatter the Chimp could have easily been a better manager.

I very much like "Known Only To Him" and "Aloha 'Oe" from this period, too. When I snuff it, one of them could be played at my funeral. And maybe I'd make a few converts in the process.

no intent whatever as trying to pass it off as the real Mccoy,

I'm happy to say I played Milky White Way for my 17 year old daughter last night and she loves it. We listened to it 3 times before she went out.

"Milky White Way" is a more accomplished song, but "Surrender" is the more challening to sing and the more exciting to listen to, for me.
