Hey,
going by the books I've read, I'd say at least 500, if not more.
It's always going to be an incomplete list, because some concerts were never really promoted, so no evidence of them exists, others are claimed to have taken place but never did, and again others exist in the memories of those who were with him at the time, but may just be bits and peices of other shows already covered.
Who knows, it was maybe even closer to 750 than we know, but from the hard evidence, my best bet is listed above.
Cheers

I don't know the number, but from the experience I can tell you that Elvis and the boys probably know the backroads of the US better than some truck drivers did. I always wondered if in later years Elvis was ever curious of some of the roads they used to take to those venues decades ago as he flew over his old stomping grounds.

Some shows were last minute or even unofficial.
Ernst will tell you of stories of locals who saw Elvis but no account of a show exists fom their respeective towns.
Evis and the boys were broke at times and would play wherever the next dollar was beconing from, ie for cash and not officially on the books.

I think I accounted for just over 230 concerts during 1956 in my book and although it was printed back in 1994 less than a handfull new dates has come to light and they all took place during the first week of the year.
So during 1956 it's safe to say he did 235 shows, not counting the 11 TV-appearances he did that year.
In 1957 he did 30 shows and 1 national TV-appearance.
As for 1954 and 1955 the score will be as complete as possible as soon as we have Ernst Jorgensens SUN-book in our hands.
Sincerely
Brian

When I was a child I was a dreamer,
I read comic books and I was the hero of the comic book
And I saw movies and I was the hero in the movie
So every dream I´ve ever dreamed has come true a hundred times.

IIRC, Brian's total is based on each concert, not concert date.Steve_M wrote:Brian, the 1956 concerts total include more than one per day and that these shows were sometimes only 20 minutes long, would that be correct ?
In 1956 Elvis sometime did as many as four separate sets on a single day. Most of his 1956 performances ran between 20 and 30 minutes, the Las Vegas and Little Rock recordings from May are salient examples.
The December 15 "Hayride" benefit looks to be closer to 50 minutes, but that was a special evening. I cannot wait to hear it, after all these years and the occasional snippet.

To me this is going to be the ultimate 50's concert released so far..drjohncarpenter wrote:The December 15 "Hayride" benefit looks to be closer to 50 minutes, but that was a special evening. I cannot wait to hear it, after all these years and the occasional snippet.
We have so little 50's live material, besides the TV shows..
I really hope the sound will be fine.. I've only heard Hound Dog from this date.. exciting stuff
This is going to be something else

When the (truncated) "Hound Dog" was issued in 1984 on Elvis: The First Live Recordings, famed LA Times critic Robert Hilburn called for a release of the entire show, saying it would be monumental.
Although Ernst claims the entire in-line tape from December 15 is nothing special as far as audio quality, the extract of "Hound Dog" we've had for over 20 years sure sounds excellent to my ears.
"Love Me Tender" and "I Was The One" were first heard in late 1978 on The Rockin' Rebel, Vol. II, taken from an off-line source.
Yes, this show will be a SUPERB addition to the true fan's collection.

You need to read posts more carefully before crafting queries:FlamingStar wrote:Nothing special about the tape from 15.December?
Wasen't "When My Blue Moons Turns To Gold Again" and "Paralyzed" performed by Elvis?
Ernst understands the musical significance of the show.drjohncarpenter wrote:Although Ernst claims the entire in-line tape from December 15 is nothing special as far as audio quality ...

Yes, those numbers I wrote were for shows, not for concert-dates.
As Doc said, Elvis sometimes played 4 shows in one afternoon/evening. In February 1956 he did 3 appearances on the Dorsey show and played 55 shows. That's one hectic month.
Sincerely
Brian
