... A brilliant, and often overlooked photo journal!
Some of his Elvis photos first turned up in Seventeen magazine, from
1956. Very moody/ jazzy stuff. I had tried to find Marvin Israel, back
in the 1980s / 90s, but sadly didnt succeed. Yes, with all due respect
for the Wertheimer photographs, Marvin Israel came very close in
presenting the private side of the young Elvis. The book, published
after his death, came too late to establish his name, as one of the
all time great Elvis photographers!

Interesting Photo Book for sure....
To see Elvis in the plaid or lumber jack type of shirt, certainly was different.....
If I'm not mistaken, there was some mention in the book that maybe a Volume Two would follow....
So, maybe there is hope for more photo's to be released....
someday....
We can only hope....

... This book flopped badly. Forget a possible vol2.
American fans [ a lot of them] dont even know there was an Elvis,
not dressed in jumpsuits...

Yes, a very nice book with some great photos although perhaps lacking the iconic quality of the best of Wertheimer.
For those who don't know, Elvis played 2 shows on May 27 at Dayton Ohio, University Of Dayton Fieldhouse. This was the last date of a tour of the Midwest. The two shows are covered by photographer Marvin Israel and reporter Edwin Miller. They accompany Elvis on the plane back to Memphis and his home on Audubon Drive and further photos were taken there. Little Rock was also part of this tour so play your live recordings of that gig while looking at these photos for a multi-dimensional Elvis experience!
As well as live photos of the shows there's also some good ones of Elvis in the empty auditorium and backstage. Presumably, these are moments between the 2 shows rather than before the first one.
The book also includes photos of the crowds at the opening of 'Love Me Tender' movie in New York but no Elvis there, of course.

I think that the Americans fans when someone is more than $29.99, they don't buy it. At least the ones from the fan clubs, maybe I'm overgeneralizing but ..it looks like thi skind of books hav emore sucess in Europe than over here.Tallhair AKA Ger Rijff wrote:... ... Fransesc, ask the 2.500 registerd members- thru a poll- what kind
of Elvis photo books they like best : Shaver and Stein Erik Skar [ the
concert years 69-77] or Wertheimer and Israel ? Well, maybe better not.
We already know the answer to my question, dont we?!
While the 70s photo books are nice references to what suits he was
wearing, where and when, for those interested... They are no more
than nice amateur photo journals, revealing little to none, of the man
behind the glitzy Vegas image. While, in the early days, the
photographs reveal a lot more... But those were very different
times to the seventies ofcourse...

Re: elvis presley 1956
I have to agree about the books from the fifties, in that they captured more of who he was back then, before insurmountable fame took over. This doesn't take away from the great work done in the seventies, just a different era in our guy's life.Tallhair AKA Ger Rijff wrote:... I agree. I don't like the splitting of fans that way, as I'm not sure it's truly the case, certainly not with me. I love all the eras.
My sense is that there are far fewer live recordings (audio or visual) of the '50s King, where as the releases of the same from the '70s naturally fuel countless discussions here. There's no comparison in how much more of '70s Elvis was captured, plus factor in the degree to which more fans today are at least possible to have "been there" whereas the '50s is now a half-century ago.
To trivialize it and make it as if we just see "jumpsuits" and go batty misses the point.
I will concede that some fans do need to get back in touch with the '50s Elvis. The relative FECC silence that greeted "Elvis At Sun" as mastered by Kevan Budd was one indication that maybe Ger and Richie are on to something, and I'm still waiting to see if the newly-issued FTD " 'Elvis Presley' - Special Edition" sparks more discussion than it has thus far...
The Marvin Israel pix I've seen are outstanding. I have to get that book!

Personally, I can't see how it is possible to be an Elvis fan without exploring the 50's. Still, I can easily understand that many find the black and white/mono era somewhat dated.
But, with sound products like Elvis At Sun and the recent Elvis Presley, how can you miss?
When it come to colour, I think Loving You gives an idea on how you can bring the 50's closer to our modern time.
Black and white is dated, colour is now.
