OH HAPPY DAY SOUND MYSTERY/QUEERY.

#286642

Post by TONY »

When the song "Oh happy day" from the "red shirt rehearsal" was released on the recent "TTWII" box set, the sound quality was awful; full of echo and the musicians were virtually inaudible. On the new unnofficial DVD "Let loose and wild", "Oh happy day" appears with almost perfectly balanced sound with audible band, but cuts off before the end.
My queery is;
A). Why did BMG release such a poor sounding version on their box set when other songs from this rehearsal are fine, and
B). Does anyone posess or know of a FULL recording of this song in proper, balanced and clear sound, with or without the accompanying footage?

A) Becaaaaaause this is an incredibly rare song, the RCA reel tapes recording the rehearsal weren't running at this point, leaving the open mics for the turner camera crew as the only ones running.

B) This unfortunately does not exist, there is however a second audience recorded version of Elvis performing this song from Aug 14, 1970.

Yes, it's BMG's fault. Do a "vocal cut" with a sound editor (removes everything that is in the middle of both channels, which is normally just the vocals) on these three odd-sounding rehearsal tracks on the BMG set and they'll sound much better (removes the underwater echo). To my recollection this rehearsal was also released as a downloadable video at the time TTWII-SE came out, on there the sound was totally fine (that might be the source for the inofficial DVD). The performance itself is a stunner if you ask me.

The video file 5mb has better sound than BMG version. It does sound amateurish (BMG) someone was just learning to use software. Or very bad taste in hearing.

Why did BMG not use an alternative sound source, ie, the one that is available on a dvd from filmed materials??!!

From what others have said, it seems that the audio source is the same, just mastered more professionally.

The video posted is still spoilt by the guys chatter! On the new TTWII "Wild and loose" dvd, there are different camera angles and the chatter doesnt seem as prominent.

What about the Aug. 10 pre-show stage rehearsal? Wasn't another version of "Oh Happy Day" recorded on 16 track tape at 15 ips by the Wally Heider crew? This would be the same sound quality as the You've Lost that Loving Feelin stage rehearsal on the Silver Box.

However, it is not clear if this has survived and if it is complete or how much of the song Elvis performed. Anyone heard it? Anyone know?

What has Jorgenson said about Oh Happy Day? I guess he wouldn't have released the crappy sounding version of TTWII 30th if he had a better audio source. But has he commented? Are there any alternate versions of Oh Happy Day in better quality? Anything discovered in recent years?
