PoPsie or Robertson?? The debate continues.........

Mon Jun 05, 2006 1:47 pm

I thought the debate as to who took the photo that adorned the cover of our man's first RCA album had been resolved. Maybe not. In the latest article regarding the forthcoming Sun FTD set in 'The Man and His Music', Ernst reveals that he now has about 30 photos taken on 31st July 1955, one of which is the famous cover photo of the album. However, he also goes on to say that the photo was taken by PoPsie NOT William 'Red' Robertson! In the press article that first revealed that Robertson had taken the cover photo and PoPsie was responsible only for the photos on the back, it states that Ernst and Peter Guralnick admitted that they were wrong in assuming PoPsie had taken the photo. Now, Ernst clearly states in his current article that it was PoPsie! So who was it? I think we should be told before the Sun FTD set is released with potentially incorrect information. :D

... Although the story is written by Ernst [ The Man...issue 72] ,

the photo caption is from the mag editor Trevor Cajiao. Even the

best editors screw up, once in a while. The 30 something photos

from Tampa, are in part pro and candid shots. And they do not

include Popsies, because he wasnt there.

What Ger said. The cover shot was taken by William V. "Red" Robertson, of Robertson & Fresh studios.
