I think Elvis was only referring to "In the Ghetto" were it says " the world turns...on a cold and grey Chicago morn'..." a.s.o.

So after all it was nothing but a funny comment sort-of-thing...

"As The World Turns" has been on TV since 1956.

I can't recall, but I think that Beckey Yancey (someone, anyway) said that Elvis used to watch it with his grandmother, in her room. The way that Elvis says it in '69 -- with such serious tone -- suggests to me that he's referring to the soap opera (isn't there a soap-ish organ sound in the background at that time?).

Yep, there is an organ playing very "old-time soap opera-ish" in the background... it's definitely a reference to the soap opera.
